It is a pretty well known fact the big female Thresher's give birth along our beaches and then the pups usually stay inshore on the bunker or squid. Last year we had a 70 pound Thresher in 65' S of Long Beach and a buddy had a 40 pound fish in 30' S of Rockaway. I used to swim in the ocean a lot, now I think twice.

2 weeks ago a dock mate of mine had, what would have been a keeper fluke, get bit right in half by 'something" halfway to the boat.
Clean through with a bite radius much too large for a bluefish. He was fishing right near the head buoy at FI Inlet. The "Gillen" out of Captree had a 4 foot thresher to the boat in that area the same day.

We had a 3' mako come up on the FI reef last year. It chased a blackfish to the surface and tore it to shreds. Awesome site

while fluking just off of jones beach we noticed a fin and tried to cast to it...
someone with a little more experience than me said it was a small mako...
they are definately out there...
and yeah generally they are not looking to eat you
but...if you seem like an easy target why not?!

I bet putting it in a plastic pail and driving it somewhere on a atv at 20mph was good for it, and then the miles offshore release they had a boat ready? what a crock of crap, fish is dead! because of media and tree huggers but the media and the tree huggers cry about shark fishing. How did the lifegaurds get away with keeping a short shark and did they have a permit to target them? I will catch all short fish and say it was for the publics safety!

Thats an interesting point.... what DID they actually do to the fish and did they have the legal authority to disturb it ????I'll look into this

three years ago out at orient point , we launch at the ramp, stary headind out, as soon as we go through that rough water they call the race, it was shark city, about 5 jaws fin on top of the water, man that was so scary, have my hart pumping when we anchor, start porgy fish, when one large one came about two foot from the boat , that thing have eyes of pure evil, swiming in these ocean waters **** no, fell over by accident, i probbly got an hart attact .

Media Hype
I was in Columbus OH on business Friday and streaming across CNBC was a live helo-cam cruising down the beach from FI to Atlantic beach with a big caption "Shark Sighting". I called my wife who was in Lido with the kids and asked if there was any chatter. No one knew. The media is ridiculous.
