I would like to know what was the biggest Mako and Thresher caught this year off Long Island ?? If anyone of you have any Photos of the Sharks you caught , post it and we all can share the Information on where it was caught , when , and what kind of bait and a little story about the catch .....

here is a photo of my 11 year old son Michael with his first mako.
we were 25 miles south west of nantucket and we were using fresh bluefish chum, and bluefish felets for the hook bait.
we caught 9 blue dogs and three makos that day this was the smallest mako

Here's a picture of the only Mako keeper we caught this year. On the only shark trip we took this year. We let a coupe of pups go and then this guy cam along. Weighted in a 312.

I went out just 3 times this year and the biggest I got was 160 lber and 3 other small Makos .... Tag and Release !!

The story behind the picture. My son and one of his friends were out partying the night before. They closed the bars and came right to the boat, still drinking. Of course they both fell sound asleep as soon as I killed the engines. I fished by myself for a couple of hours releasing a pair of small blue sharks and a mako pup. My son finally wakes up to the sound of a clicker going off and all of a sudden the fish is ten feet in the air, about fifty feet out. That woke both of them up in a hurry. The fish jumped twice more before settling down for the fight. Needless to say, I put my son on the reel, since I has alrady caught three fish.

Nothing worth reporting for this season, worst I've ever had for Mako/Thresher, although I'd like to think it would have been different had the fall weather cooperated a little more. There is always next year.

MakoMike, nice fish, I like the way you have him tied off, real pro. Did you "buttonhole" him, it looks like the dart is still in him.

By the way, it's not over yet, I've had them into November, you can still catch them, the water temp was 54 last week just South of the 20 Fathom curve. It's a little tougher this time of year, but they are there.

Very Observant. No I didn't button hole him, if I had I would have unties the dart and pulled it through. Turs out that the dart had wroked its way up and split the heart in two. That explained why he just went limp when I hit him, instead of the usual mako antics.

tally for 5 trips was 5 small makos (1 was kept) and 4 blue sharks. 3 makos were caught on 1 trip, two on another. I'd say the sharking sucked and the weather was even worse !! here's hoping next year things improve.

Agree. This was a dismal year. Started off real slow. Barely a couple of blue dogs. Then a keeper mako at the canyon in mid-July and a few released small makos Aug/Sept.

Also, a released pup thresher while fluking in 80'.

Shark season is over

I dont know,My son and I had a pretty good year.We caught a good number of makos, two nice threshers and to many to count blue sharks. We kept one mako and one thresher,thats all we needed anmd released all the rest. Garnted most of the makos were on the small side,but that indicates that future years should be good. I fish mostly south of Shinne**** in 140-180 feet of water

This is the only decent fish I had. I only managed to get offshore 3 times ~ unlucky I guess. Fortunately, she hit at the right time ~ Bayshore Tourney. 132.5 pounds was good enough for 3rd place.

Maybe next year I will get back to living up to my name ~ but 19 in one year will be tough to beat!
