where are you fishing????? and what kind of sharks??
If you are fishing the NE waters.
They will work but will most likely not be able to handle anything much bigger than 6 feet. I would recommend spooling them up with spectra so that it will increase the capacity of line on the reel. So that if you do come across something of size you will have a better chance in landing it with a reel of that size.

I have 2 4'0 penn senators on 7' boat rods will they work for sharkin?
Most of the sharks we catch so far are only about 3-4 feet long and fairly easy to catch.
Thanks

That's how about 90% of us started off sharking. Penn 113s or 114s on broomstick poles. Just make sure you service the drags and you should be good to go. Just don't expect to land any monsters on those set-ups.

Sounds just like how we got started-fished 2 6/0's and 2 4/0's.

As a complete newbie, the 4/0's were perfect for getting great fights out of the medium to large blue sharks that are often all over the place in the areas we fish. Wonderful way to really enjoy your time out there and get some practice in how to fight stand up.

As others said, make sure the drags are in good shape and don't expect to be able to handle a real good fish if one shows up.

Good luck, be safe and have fun.

As an aside - use to search function here and you'll find all kinds terrific "getting started with sharking" info. Tons of practical info on this site.

I just rekindled a few old 6/0's in my collection. I cut down two old fin-nor rods and turned them into pretty effective standup rods. I have a few golds, 30's and 50's but am looking forward to hooking up a few sharks on the 6/0's this summer for old time sake, Great Reel.:)

They will handle the smaller sharks, however if your not sight fishing I recommend 50's.You never know when that trophy fish will come along and you won't stand a chance on a 4/0 or 6/0.
Ask St.Pablo about the fish he was on last summer while using a 6/0.
They lost it after a long battle, couldn't get enough drag.

botoole, use something like the Manley Spring Scale to set your drags. The scale should be positioned off the rod tip making a bend in the rod in much the same way as a fish would bend the rod. You want to go with about 25% drag to line pound test rating.

For star drag reels you just have that one setting after you lock the reel up. If you need more during the heat of battle, I wouldn't touch the star drag adjuster, with a gloved hand, I'd increase drag pressure on the line from the spool, and very gently at that.

On my 80's I go with 18 pounds of drag at strike, on my 50 outfits I go with about 14. If I need to increase I can go to Full, and that gets me tom about 25 pounds on my 80 outfits. With the Star drag you don't have that feature, hence the gloved hand to palm the spool, but again,..... ONLY IF NEEDED. Last resort type of thing.

For sharks in our waters you should be fine with those drag settings.

Matt what # line are you fishing on your 80's? ON an 80 i would put at least 100 or 130 and be fishing more like 40#'s of drag. Do you have straight 80 on your 80's and straight 50 on your 50's?

thanks makomatt, that did the trick with that scale and also recall captainlarry84 mentioning it during his seminar. I am just starting out and have a few 9/0 senator reels. They did just fine this past weekend on 100 to 160lb makos, but we'll have to be careful if we hook up with something significant. Take care.
