Hello, this is my first post I enjoy this forum and wish I found it sooner, you guys do a great job with great info.I fish for giant tuna off chatham and mass bay and also enjoy shark fishing and love reading all your info... Im not sure if anyone has previously mentioned glitter in chumming for sharks, but if not Ill share my experience.I first saw this being used bye some fisherman while fishing in the greek islands and the results were so good I gave it a shot in mass bay and ever since I use it while chumming for sharks.I grind up fresh (frozen for 2 hours) pogy, mackeral, herring,or bluefish, I freeze because I find the grinder slices cleaner bits that way and its much neater. I empty all the bits in a bucket and add pogy oil, then I just put 2 nice handfulls of glitter ( glitter from a party shop) and then in freezer. When I reach boat in morning I just add seawater before I leave for the fishing grounds and drop the chum bucket. The glitter looks awesome slowly trickling in slick and I really think the shiny flashes drives there curiosity enough to investigate or they look like scales from bait being eaten.I have caught many many sharks using glitter, just something I wanted to share thanks again.

25hydra, thanks, the glitter,....that's probably the ONLY thing I have not put into my chum, it's on my list to try for the coming season. Someone else mentioned using glitter a few weeks ago too.

Sounds like a good idea.

I use glitter in my slick-not the craft store type glitter, but the larger flake stuff that you can buy through Lurecraft. I believe adding a visual element to the slick enhances it. I usually mix the glitter with a box of oatmeal and a gallon of bunker oil at the dock before heading out.

25hydra- Welcome to the site and that's a great idea. I can imagine that the glitter looks very enticing in the slick. Not to be a party pooper, but isn't glitter made of material similar to mylar (like the balloons I always see floating around in the ocean)? That stuff will not decompose anytime soon. I know a handful of glitter doesn't seem like much, but it all adds up. Strips of newspaper (a tactic mentioned here several times) tossed into the slick would seem to be a better alternative to me. Just my humble opinion.

I like the glitter idea, as long as I can find one that I don't have to mix with FISH EX-LAX. Too add to this I'm going to get me some of them Party Whistles whick come out like an iguana's tongue in place of a Makomagnet! Can't beat it SHARK FISHING AND A WILD PARTY TOO!
EVERYONE COME ON DOWN!!!
Seriously, It sounds like a great idea-many,many lures have this added to their outer coating! Will definately give it a try!

25hydra-It's a great idea and if there isn't an impact I'm all for it-worth looking into. In my mind there must be a biodegradable alternative. Anyway, keep the new ideas coming-It sounds like you have a lot of experience and knowledge to share.

Guys,
I know there's a small market in New england for herring scales. I forget what they are used for. If some of the bigger bait distributors wanted to I'm sure they could get some easily. That would be biodegradable glitter.

I fished last Fall on the Helen H on an overnight chunk trip. During the daylight they utilized glitter mixed in with the butters. Great results as we had fish on within 10 minutes of stopping at a location. Will definitely be trying myself this coming season.

Off and on I've been using baby bunkers for flutter bait when chumming and chunking(I just mush them up in my hands) and have noticed a increase in the amount of fish attracted to the slick when I use the baby bunker.
I thought it was just the bunker itself for some reason but after reading this thread I think it might be the scales. They are small and do make a nice presentation going down the slick.

Whats next trolling aol cds versus old video dvds for a tuna teaser- please dont go there(Lol)

I like this glitter thing heading out to pearl art store in manhaatan- what color to choose? I will go w/ pink and gold.

A old friend of mine "Mike on the Desire" use to steal the left over bread products from the Pepridge farm oulet and grind the crap out of it and release handfulls of it followed by a nice butterfish. It worked I have not seen Mike deploy this technique in ages . But as a kid when learning the ropes of Tuna chunking i found it to be the greatest thing.

Be safe with all those sparkles
