In your latest fishing report you mentioned catching Shad. How, when, and where do you fish for them? Thanks.

Hello Rockin
The shad that I was reffering to is the "Hickory" Shad which it predominately migrates our bays / inlets during the spring and fall. Once abundant, you can actually see them flashing (moving current) chasing small spearing and sandeels near the surface.

Many people targets them with Sebiki rigs, small shiny jigs (kastmasters, hooligans, charlie graves, hopkins, etc). It is also an excellent fly fighter (leaps like a miniature tarpon) and it will take a fly (#1 Clouser and deceiver).

Last week when I was at Democrat Pt., I spotted them and my buddy used a light tackle outfit and I opted to use my flyrod. I am sure they will be just about any south shore waters (near inlets) during the 2nd hour of the first and last tides.

Hope this helps!

I am far from an expert, but shad are typically caught this time of year in the Delaware River. Port Jervis is one of the towns in the area where they are caught. Something called a shad dart seems to be the lure of choice.

Hello SeaJay
Thanks for the reply and you are absolutely correct about the Shad darts and the Delaware River! Every year I generally try to target them with a light spinning (w/ shad darts) and Fly outfit along the Delaware Water Gap.

However, those are the "American" Shad, which migrate (spawn) every Late April/May season along the Pennsylvania rivers. These American shads are larger than the Hickory Shads but equally as tough customer once it is hooked!
