Hi Guy's, i own a number of seeker rods (10 to be exact). the BA 50-7 which is rated for 40 (50) 60 lb test is an excellent Tile/Tuna jigging stick. But has a little too much muscle for Cod jigging with 8-16 oz jigs. Which Seeker model would you recommend for Jigging Cod with 8-16 oz jigs? Thanks in advance for your advice. I would be looking for something in the 7 ft range.

Seeker Rods

The BA-30, also 7', is lighter than the BA-50. I used one for a number of years, but never jigged cod with it. I would imagine an 8-10 oz. jig would be fine, but anything over that may be a problem, from what I recall.

I haven't been in the market for a Seeker in some time, but I know they have that Super Seeker line out now, mabey someone with experience using them knows of a model in that line that would be better suited to your needs? Or that other line, Black Steel, I believe.

Thanks Billy

Thats what i had in mind as well as John is a good friend of mine. Just wanted to see what suggestions you guy's would come up with. Been jigging Cod for over 35 years. My present stick is a custom made Sea Isle, but it's getting up there in years and i would like to have a backup.

I think the black steel rods would be the best for cod ..Try the CJB80h or the CJBF80XH that the blank # John should know the the rod # ..
They also have a Lamiglas CGBT96H blank # they have it pre-made..I made a custom for a customer he loves it caught a 42lb fish the first time out..I would also take a look at the calstar GF800H I think they make a XH now too..That may only come as a 7' rod..

John,

Knowing how you like to fish and the gear you are currently using, I would stay away fron the 96H. Its a bat! You would hate it.

I just built a rod on the CSB909 blank and I love it. I bends like your current Sea Isle rod and would be a perfect backup for you.

If you have some money, get B40 to build you a rod on the GUSA Wahoo blank......Its a sweet blank that has an amazingly slow taper that is perfect for the way we fish. Light as a feather.

Good Luck

I agree with Mister X, if you think your #50 Seeker is stiff then the CGBT96H of factory equivelent is not for you. If yyou do go the custom route then the Seeker CSB909 of GUSA Wahoo should be to your liking

Wow thats funny, the one rod that I showed with the others that got shot down both times..You guys love I was told its a hot cod jigging rod but no one liked it so I got rid of it..I think after reading this I just may keep one around..
As far as the GUSA Wahoo I hear there great I should know in a week or two have some on order...
I did build & fish other GUSA blanks nice stuff I love that MEGA..I did catch a small cod (26") on a cut down SW76MH nice fight on that rod..Keep the info coming guys

Richi I was not attacking your post or the rod, As D&J Stated the #50 Seeker rod he has is a little stiff for his liking so i dont think the Lami is a good choice based upon what he is looking for.....not that its not a good codjigger, factory or custom, it is, i have built many

For those wondering what the difference is between these 2 blanks, it is weight. Both have pretty much the same power, and same action. The Seeker CSB909 weighs 14.5oz, the GUSA Wahoo wieghs 8oz.

The Wahoo is available in both 8' & 7' versions, and there is a Composite 7' version for those who don't want to spend the money or are afraid of an all graphite rod. John at TFT should have the Composite version in the rod rack by the end of this week.

Rodwinder not taken as a attack..I like to give my clients as many choices as I can..The seeker I was told is a great cod rod so I gave it as a choice..Both times it was picked up & put down with a no..The first rod was the Lami..I to think its a little on the bat size..But after building it putting 16oz on the tip it a nice rod with good action..
When you hear that "I caught my biggest fish ever on your rod" you got to love it..I am going to build the next rod on a Wahoo 7' he wants a light strong blank for cod..
I'm also going to build two Wahoo composites for tuna jigging & one SW70H for grouper & amberjack..The grouper rod I'm sending to NC on a weekend trip for testing along with the Wahoo if I can get them done in time.. I am confident that these blanks will perform for my clients & hope many more to follow..

Far too civil.

Gentlemen, we can all do so much better than this, especially now that Billy is back. We haven't had a good fight here in a while, so lets ge this one going, shall we?

From what I have seen of Seeker products, they use first rate materials in their blanks, and lots of 'em. Seeker rods fill a large and necessary niche, that niche being "fishing rods for dummies". It goes to show that they know their client base very well. Screwing up in a catastrophic fashion while hung on a fish with a Seeker rod is as close to impossible as can be. Of course, these near bullet proof characteristics come at a cost, that cost being weight, sensetivity, and recoil. If you see yourself as an accomplished fisherman, you might be better served with a more refined implement, such as the ones made by GUSA or St. Croix or many others.

John,

mk5381, who regularly makes the Viking deepwater trips, uses his 909s extensively for cod and tiles. Im sure if you send him a PM he can give you specs on what he has.

With all the time you put in at the rail, it pays to go custom. The hardest part will be choosing from all the talented builders around here!

Good Luck!

Thankf for all the input guy's

Will most likely go with another Custom. But before i commit i will spend some time with John at Trophy Tackle. He should be getting some of the new Super Seekers in soon, and there are two models i am interested in at least "taking a look at". Again, thanks for the input and advice

Seeker CSB909

John,

I personally love the Seeker CSB909's. Ralph built me one that I caught my record tile on. Then Seeker sent me 6 blanks that I had custom built or gave away. I bring 2-3 of them with me on every cod/tile trip. I had the foam foregrip extended to 10 inches so you can lay it on the rail when reeling in from the deep. The tips are 14.

I have not used the GUSA or else I would comment. If you can make it on John's tile trip July 13th, I can bring a Seeker for you to use.

Wish i could make it

But i am wayyyyy over booked on Charters already, not to mention that John has me hooked on Tuna now so a few of those trips are in order as well. I have plenty of Seekers (5) ( BA50-7 alone). Great Tile and Tuna Jigging sticks but a little overpowering when it comes to Cod jigging.

You guys going over to John's shop, he will have the GUSA Wahoo blank there by the end of the week, and hopefully by the end of next week he will have the 7' Wahoo Jr as well.

you can never have enough choices - everyone likes something a little different, everyone has a different price point. HAving a place to go to pull on all the choices is a MAJOR LUXURY, as it allows each fisherman decide what HE likes best. With JOhn's shop being located in teh middle of Long Island, you couldn't ask for a better deal than that.

If its 7' and off the sheelve your looking for the BA 30 is a good choice. I've used it for Cod before and you'll have plenty of fun with it. I have the CSB 909 and love it along with other custom sticks but many times when I feel like fishing a 7' stick I will break out the BA #30 as I like the action very much.
