Hey guys:

Since I am leaving my NEW yak on top of the car on my driveway, as seen on the pic already posted (I BOUGHT MINE...), I decided to use MaguillaGorilla's technique to secure it.

He uses a chain to go through the wholes in his Cobra FND and into the car by the doors in each side. In his case, since his car's paint is already waisted, it is OK.

In my case, I remembered I had some covered with plastic 12' steel cables, from my previous job (used to lock computer equipment), that worked very well.

It is strong, very discreete and will not scratch the car. Check it on the pic.

I LEAVE MY YAK AT MY PARENTS HOUSE WHEN I WORK A FEW DAYS IN A ROW AND I LEAVE IT ON MY CAR WHEN IM OFF A FEW. (I WORK THREE 12 HOUR SHIFTS A WEEK, OFF FOR 4!) I DO NOTICE THAT MY RASBERRY FND IS FADING A BIT, BUT WHO CARES. I GOT THE LOCK AND CHAIN AT HOME DEPOT FOR 15 DOLLARS, ALSO IF MY STRAPS FAIL THE CHAIN WILL NOT BREAK AND MY YAK WONT FALL OFF THE CAR. ILL GET A PIC WITH MY PARENTS DIGITAL CAMERA AND POST IT AS SOON AS I CAN.

Its not a good idea to leave your kayak ontop of the car all the time. At this time of year where the temp. doesn't rise above 80 degrees its o.k. But if your kayak is ontop of the car in 90+degree day your kayak will warp. Don't forget your kayak is plastic.

YAK ON TOP OF CAR IS TEMPORARY

This is a temporary solution. The coming week I will be hanging it in the garage beams.

warp? really its usually on the car only at night bc its in the water all day...my cobra is really thick plastic and doesnt seem like it would warp..jon, any thoughts on this..food for thought flyrodder youve got me thinking...thanks

Magilla your Cobra FnD will warp just as fast as my Ocean Kayak Drifter if it was left strapped sitting ontop of the car. You might think that the plastic is thick but the sun and heat beating down on your kayak will warp it. Ask mrsinbad he has a Cobra and it(warp)happened to his. It will happen to any kayak made out of plastic. It doesn't matter if you paid a lot or a little for your kayak. They're made out of plastic. Your better off leaving it on the side of your house or in the garage. If the warp is minor you can put your kayak in the shade and it will go back to its original shape. But if its a major warp it will never return to its original shape.

On the kayak left outside, I dunno if it would necessarily warp, but the UV rays will definitly hurt the boat over time. I guess you could look into waxing it though. Might help?.

8500 hours and counting

according to a plactic tech. guy i know, he says the live span of these kayaks is about 8500 hours in direct sun light.
which is about 3-4 years life span in the northeast, if left in direct sunlight all the time.

this is what i was told,
anybody have any experience with this ?

he suggested having a canvas cover made for the kayak, also make sure the fabric offers uv protection.

If you leave a kayak tied up tight and its hot out it will warp. The plastic has a memmory and will come back however.

As to UV damage. They will last longer than 3-4 years however the UV will break down and eventually destroy the kayak. You have 3 choices.
1) Do nothing.
2) Keep the kayak out of sun whenever possible.
3) Treat the kayak with a UV protectant which is basically a sunblock for your kayak. We carry 303 protectant and its designed to do exactly this. Prevent sun damage.
