I have been fishing the Sound now for for 15 years now and have a close circle of fishing friends(about four that all information is exchanged, location of fish, tide, bait, color of lures etc) Between all of us, someone is out everyday so the information is very current versus the weekend fisherman that relys on older information from the paper and or tackle store.

Once in awhile information leaks out and that secret spot gets crowded by the masses and gets to much pressure.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU TRUST WITH THAT SECRET SPOT?

That's the inherent problem with a secret spot. You want to share it with a close friend - and maybe he wants to share it with a close friend too.

Just look at how many boats are on the water. If the spot is hot during prime time, it might become news, no matter what you do.

So, any of my "secret" spots I enjoyed until I either opened my mouth too wide, or it was "found out". Either way, I just enjoyed it while I could.

Secret spots tend to move around anyway. Some of the ones I found had no fish the years before. That's why I like to try spots that were hot many years ago, and died out. Sometimes it becomes a new "secret spot".

Hmm… this is a very interesting post. For a second there… I thought people were going to post their favorite spots. :)

Folks, this is how I see it. For most parts, there are not too many secret spots around! Some of my productive spots are also very popular grounds and I believe it all boils down to how well you do the homework!

It is more important to understand the key fundamentals (structure, bait, temp. tide, moon, season and migration) and start "thinking" about it. Think about a specific quarry and understand their behavior. Identify the less popular hrs. that coincide with the productive times (i.e.: less boat noises, first lights and late nights)… Be a stealthy hunter!!! Once you start to get a good grasp of what's happening with the surrounding… you will be able to predict where the next bite will be as well as when.

Now, for those who wonders why I am on a constant move…. Pardon me for not being unsociable, I am just trying to catch a tide or beat the fish to their next resting ground. :)

HINT: If I hear that someone got a brute… I am more interested about the tide phase than where! That way I can track them down along their paths. ;)

As to how many people do I share my information: I can't say… but I do know that at times, my close friends don't talk to me for days. ;)

All of us like different things about fishing. For example.

You might just like to pull on fish and could care less about the spot.

You might like to find fish that no one else knows about.

You might like to fish the same grounds as everyone else while outfishing them.

You might not even care about catching fish, but you like to know all the spots where they are.

You might not care about catching fish, but you might enjoy helping people catch fish by giving them spots.

I think that there is no such thing as a secret spot in the daytime.

I would bet that everyone in this website at one time or another has been fighting a fish when another boat comes along. what do we do?- we all put the rod tip in the water like we are waiting for a hit, until that boat leaves. show them you are fighting a fish and they will stay, good bye to the peace and quit. Every once in awhile we lose a fish this way, but we catch more in the long run

Crazy Al: we should do a secret spot post: My answer when anyone asks me where I was fishing is:"THE FLEMISH CAPS"

How about the "flip side" of the question: how many people would you believe if they told YOU of a "secret spot"? Probably just throwin' me off the trail, anyway!
Old surfcaster's credo: all fisherman are liars except me and you - and I'm not too sure about you!
The old surfcaster never claimed to have caught a fish and was very seldom caught in the act of catching one. My dad taught me to tie knots with eyes closed so you never needed a light, cover tail tracks in the sand, and bury fish rather than put them in the buggy where they might be seen...
Then again, how many really secret spots could there be within a half day's travel of one of the greatest population centers in the country? I agree with Al, its a combination of many factors - not just the "spot". And maybe someday I'll get it figured out. I hope.

I should of called it "Where the fish are" I agree that there are no secret spots left with all the fisherman out there. We all would agree that fish migrated on a weekly basis, The famous quote of a fisherman "You should of been here yesterday"

Now you have found where the fish are currently located and you are hammering them. The spot where they were during the past week is now crowded with the fisherman getting the old news, and of course catching nothing,(a dollar short and a day late) wondering about the report they were given.

I still feel that a small group of dedicated anglers can be the best recipe for success. You can be kept informed "where the fish are"

But how many other fisherman do you trust?

BASSAVANT: I agree with you that all fisherman are liars. I will tell the truth to my close friend that I can trust "I HOPE" but will( in a better way of putting it) Will hold back information when telling other fisherman about my catch., the more questions they ask, the more locked jaw I become. ultimately telling them I was at the Flemish Caps

I am always the one out there alone fishing a spot that is new to me, away from the crowds(can't stand them) , once In a while I will find out "where the fish are"

There are not too many secret spots on the Sound, all are pretty much common knowledge. What can be secret is what tide, what moon, what bait, etc. The fish are at the points, the harbor entrances, and the drops, but when and how changes a lot !
