I have been a member of Sea Tow for the past couple of years.I have the unlimited towing package for $99.Knock on wood i never had to use them.I do most of my boating in Long Island Sound from Cold Spring Harbor to Port Jefferson.I just wanted to know what others are using because i have seen a lot more red tow boats than yellow ones.

Have SeaTow-their H.Q. is only 1/2 mile from my dock. Never had to use them, but one time heading out offshore for a shark trip I requested a radio check. They came over the air scrambling like there was something wrong-no hesitation! I got both operators (Southold and Shinne****) at the same time. I felt bad, but they advertize free radio checks and it was very early in the morning, not many boats out. Very reasonable price-no limit as long as you make an effort to fix the problem that got you stranded!

Fine Print

Be sure to read the fine print on the agreement for towing insurance. The BOATUS/Tow Boat US "unlimited" package has a 25 mile limit, after that it is stated as a $1000 maximum charge. This isn't all that bad for a 40 mile tow, but you are not covered exactly as "unlimited" seems to imply. I know whatever plan West Marine offers has the same type of snag to it, I don't believe they even cap the maximum charge though.

Also, Know the difference between a soft ungrounding & SALVAGE. If you're taking on water & in danger of going under it's salvage & you will be raped!
One guy in my marina was charged 5K for a 3/4 mile tow & a pump when he "popped" a plank.

DITTO. The "fine print" can be very costly when you have no other alternative!

Sea Tow

I have been a member of Sea Tow for years and did (unfortunetly) get a chance to use them once. I tried taking one of my short cuts through the flats and the tide had gone out more then I thought. Anyway, I ended up stuck on some high ground in about six inches of water. I wasn't in the mood to wait out the tide so I figured I might as well put that $95 to good use. To make a long story short, the captain was excellent, he got in as close as he could threw me a line and pulled me out. He also towed me to a safe area where I can check out the prop and such. No hidden charges, no questions, just showed him the yellow card and that was it. All in all it was a good experience, at least now I make sure the tide is where I want it before I cut through those skinny waters.

sea tow /tow boat u.s.

I worked as a Sea Tow capt. on the great south bay. if you didn't get the sea tow package only $ 95.00 dollars
or around the same price tow/boat U.S.,
vessel assist That covers you for the whole year .You paided that in the first hour of the tow. Please trust me I,am not saying it is right. BUT as fisherman / boating people. We pay that for a good$$$Inshore fluke REEL$$$. how many extras of them do we have . Not including the rod I worked side by side with both companys. Even if you didn't have tow coverage at that time of your Emergency / grounding /taking on water/running out of fuel/ leaving the radio on too long no battery life left /fuel filter or anything else that happens on the water. you were glad that the Water Towing Company showed UP.I hope nobody get up set with this BUT in the world of boating this Insurance is CHEAP!!!! I,am highly suggesting that you go with one of these three. Read the fine print call the company and get all the information for your particular needs .
