If you live in Smithtown you've got it made. I watched a guy with a pitch fork on the east side of the nessaquoge river turn over clumps of sand at low tide and fill a pail with hugh sandworms. Must of had 3 doz in 1/2 hour. He said you need a permit, I'm sure well worth the money at the price for worms at the bait shop. Paid $9 for a doz at Silly Lilly just after Memorial day, no other bait shop had any!
$9 bucks a dozen!!! Wow, this is at least double what I paid one year ago. So much for worm baits. They must be digging these things our of mid-east oil wells to cost that much.
I'm not sure on the regulations here, but .50 sounds like a good deal, especially if you can find dozens in such little time. 8.50 is probably worth the 30 minutes of digging.
There was a similar thread someplace here asking about worms in the Nissy. Just go down there at low tide, bring your bug spray and start turning the mud over near the creek that leads to the old yacht clubs. You'll find your worms. Any place along the mooring field at low tide should yield hefty worms.
