Salmon

Was just up in Mexico Bay ( 8-27 ) fishing on a friends Charter boat. Between 4 guys we caught 6 King Salmon on a 6 hour trip. All caught trolling in 85 feet of water fish were from 18 pounds to 28. The Salmon are just staging out side the river.

Im headed up there 10/9 for the entire weekend. If you havent got a room yet it is goin to be really hard to get that time of year. I always go up to the campgrounds. Its really cheap and most campgrounds have private access to the river which is key. You avoid all those crowds. It is nuts up there. PM me for any other info or questions.

I used go up twice in the fall every year starting Labor Day and in early October. Bring rain gear with you. Make sure your wading boots are felt sole or cleats. Have plenty of tackles. A pair of polarized glasses will help you to see the bottom when moving around the river. BE VERY CAREFULL WHEN WADING THE RIVER. WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING!!! Move back to the shore when someone hook up with a fish. They will do the same for you. Charge up your digital camera to take picture of some fantastic Kings and Coho. The very first time I went up and caught my first 29lbs. King on a fly rod with 17# mono. Remember to fight the fish from down stream. Let the current and the drag to slow the fish down. And have a great time! Check out the link below.

check out www.theriverguide.com we fished with them last year.I would recommend to fish the river by driftboat we went in mid Oct for 2 days caught steelhead and trout all day up to 18 lbs.once you learn the river you can fish some spots on your own.Be prepared for cold and wet conditions this time of year.(snow, hale, rain wind).but awesome fishing strong fighters...great trip!

thanks for all the info guys!!! i did a lil' research myself and found out there are so many regs to salmon fishing in the river such as a mandatory leader length and you can't use lures with trebles or more than 1 treble(may have misread that one, can anyone chime in on that one?). we are definately gonna stop in a tackle shop there to hear the real deal on the regs. rodwinder, that site(salmoncrazy.com) is pretty awesome...thanks!!! will post how we do when i get back. the trip is set for the weekend of 10/4--------->ronnie

When you get off the exit for Pulaski youll see a big shop called Fat Nancy's...Nice people, large selection of tackle and clothes.Very helpful with river conditions and regulations its a good first stop plus there are lots of tackle shops (the small family upstate personal kinds not the big box stores)all over the area who would be glad to help you out.when we went we stayed at a friends house up there but theres lots of places to stay usually with vacancies its not like it used to be all places all booked up not as many people interested in driving (gas $) to catch a few fish in cold conditions in a basically quiet town (boring to some.. a relief for others like myself). If you hire a boat for the lake be prepared theres a good chance youll get blown out this time of year and those guides still go out unless its a true gale...(its there only source of income this time of year) it gets rough out on the big lakes but on the river you can get away from the wind somewhat.Hope all this was helpful

Make sure you have felt soles on your boots or wear spikes or korkers as the bottom is painted with grease there. Not real grease but you might think so also the best polarized glasses you can afford. This fishing is sight fishing and you will not be making big casts. Another ti is when you find a likely spot stare at the water and make an imaginary window remember what everything looks like and after a while you will spot the fish. Remember this tip because these fish can be 25 or 35 lbs and they,ll swim right past and you wont see them. Good Luck.

Douglaston

You have to pay for it and walk a bit, but:

1) It has much less people which is definitely a plus

2) It's close to the lake meaning the fish are fresh and aren't as line shy.

When I head to the Salmon River now, I only fish Douglaston.

a little off topic from pulaski but I'm in Oswego right now for school and have been fishing the river for smallmouth regulary and even though its a bit too early still, I've already been spotting some nice salmon coming upriver at night plus theres been some beast browns roaming upriver near the water gates but real hard to catch given their position, so if any of you guys come up my way PM me because our salmon run is just starting over here another good rain and it should be on

Salmon River map

My favorite spot is the Sportsman's Pool. Click on the link below for the entire river map. Check the regulation regarding to the lenght of the leader and size of the hook. Look for dark shade object in the water with your polarized glasses. Cast at least five feet in front of the fish. DO NOT USE A SNAGGING MOTION! DEC IS WATCHING! Just let the hook drift to its target. When you hook a fish, set the hook couple of times. Then enjoy the ride! It is like walking a pit bull. You will be walking up and down the river. Make sure to bring enough tackles with you, you will loose a lot of hooks and split shots.

BK fisher, over the years the DSR has changed big time and can be "loaded" with fishermen. If the fish have been in the river for a couple of weeks there are tons of places to fish with little fishing pressure. "just walk and he will find". LOL

It's been years since I have been there but fished a section of river in Altmar most of the time. I always hooked up with fish just hardly ever landed them. It's like hooking a speeding car going by from the side of the road.

Usually after you hook up with a fish it will run you down stream fast and its tough to hold the fish back without snapping your leader or getting spooled. If you decide to head downsteam after your fish you might risk losing your place on the river also.

I landed some huge salmon and a few nice size steelhead in that river. One day I might consider running up there again.

I see that the DEC has changed the regulations in the "fly fishing only" section starting Oct 1st, 2008. That will put an end to the "chuck & duck" fishing near the Altmar Bridge, I do believe that the section below the bridge was called "the unemployment line" by the locals.Douglaston still offers the nicest water and fresh fish but I am also a steelie man and can wait for the crowds to thin out. Nothing like a hot bite during a white out. I remember putting five bucks in the mail box to park and fish the Douglaston area.
