I was given an ambassadeur 6500 as a gift and would like to use it for bass/fluke. I plan on spooling it with 15 lb stren and am unsure of a rod. I havent realyl fished in the salt in 3 years because of being stationed in the South with the Army. I went to purchase a rod on the internet, and was looking for one with medium action. I also noticed a column i wasnt familiar with. Taper. What exactly is rod taper? How does it effect the rod's flexibility? The rod i want to purchase should be able to handle up to a 3 ounce sinker without bending in half, if you get ,my drift. I want it to be stiff, yet flexible at the right time. Your help is appreciated

Hoplite,

TAPER. Depends how the manufacturer lays up the material when making a blank, all by design.

Simple taper is when the diameter of a blank has a smooth transition from the butt to the tip.

FAST TAPER is when the diameter of the blank is fairly constant going up from the butt and decreases sharply the last 1/4 at tip end. If you flex this rod only about the top 1/4 will flex but this type of blank has tremendous lifting power thru the mid section to the butt. I have heard this called a "west coast taper"

ACTION describes how much of the blank flexes. Extra fast = 1/4 of the top flexes. Fast = 1/3. Moderate = 1/2 of the top flexex. These are approximate measurements.

For your needs there are many choices in your local tackle shops. Read the previous topic for references.

If custom is your desire I have many fine blanks for you to choose from.

Hi,

There is no set price for a custom designed rod. The total cost is determined differently by each builder/shop. Excellent blanks are expensive.

My custom rods start around $325 to give you an idea. You are always welcome to come by and see for yourself what goes into my custom rods and what you get for your hard earned $$$$$. I also have loaner rodes you can try out.

Recently an angler took my bucktail rod for several fluke trips. He like it and ordered one customed for him. At his request I extended the butt 6" to make it 6 1/2'. He has since called and said he can't wait for his new rod to be completed because the rods he had been using don't do the job anymore.

Right now between running partyboats and rod building it will take about a month from start to finish. When the last coat of epoxy goes on I let the epoxy cure for 1 week before I let anyone flex the rod.

Please contact me at (631) 567-8049 if I can be of further assistance.
