i have some nice setups for baitfishing in the bay. They work nicely for fluke and weaks. Stripers too. I am looking for a light combo which i could jig 1/2 to 2 ounce bucktails on. The specices i would do this for are weakfish and fluke. Some blues mixed in also. I would like some recomandations from the experts before i buy anything. Please share your opinions on a combo that would my fishing purposes.

Same reel as above or

Ambassadeur 5000

CHEAPER THE BETTER

i HAVE BEEN FISHING WITH THE 19.99 SPEACISL COMBO FOR FLUKE AND KILLING THEM! THE LIGHTER THE POLe THE BETTER ACTION ON THE BUCKTAILS. FOR PLUGING I'M USING LIGHT ALSO AND WORKS BETTER FOR CASTING.YES I HAVE THE CALCUTTAS GARCIAS NEWELLS BUT ONE DAY I FORGOT MY ROD BOUGHT THE 19.99 COMBO AND WON'T GO BACK TO THE GOOD STUFF! IT'S NOT THE EQUIPMEMT ITS THE ANGLER AND PROPER BAIT AND LURE BEING USED.

Togmaster,

Your absolutely correct. The equipment doesen't make the angler, the angler make the equipment. However, some people prefer nice, higher quality equipment. To each is to own...right? Besides i'd rather spend xtra money on stuff like this then on senseless drugs like most of my generation does.

At last I've found MY people!!!

I have been starting to feel so out numbered by all the custom made rod and Van Staal reel types that I was beginning to wonder about my right to even be fishing with what I use. My high-end combo consists of a 5'9" light/medium UglyStick ($39.00) and a Shimano FX-4000FA ($24.99) loaded with 12# fluorocarbon. I think that this is great for the jigging and light to medium action that you guys are talking about. Recently I've been flirting with the idea of targeting a decent sized striper with it when they return. As I said, that was my high-end combo. The rest of my arsenal consists of various Daiwa (and the like) combos when they go on sale. I've yet to spend more than $50.00 or so on a rod and reel combo and I'm pretty happy with what I've got, it works for me. I sure hope this doesn't get me thrown out of the "serious guys fishing club", but if it does, I'll just keep on "econo-fishing" and having a ball anyway. Sauseach his own.

Hi all,

Different opinions expressed here and you are all right. Each one of us has different reasons why we fish with whatever we use. Many times it is how the rod feels to the angler with or without a fish on.

I have seen $19.99 or $29.99 rods in local tackle shops that would be fun to fish with. These are mostly lite tackle. At that price you can throw them out at the end of the year.

I have handlined flounders and fluke and it is a blast. Now that's economical fishing!

Usually in life you get what you pay for if you do the research in advance. If you repaired many factory rods and saw how they are assembled you might might think differently about how and who made the rod you bought. Time is money in manufacturing. Listen to any angler who has lost a prize fish due to a rod malfunction.

Many times after explaining the benefits of a well designed and crafted custom rod, a person will say fine but it's not for me. That's life. Several times I have taken folks to a local shop and helped them pick out the right rod for them. I do go thru the pile for them and try to find one that has the guides properly installed in regards to the spine.

Flukekid. Go to your local tackle shop and ask to see a DIAWA Eliminator rod. They have several models. Look for the model that is rated for the lightest lures. They cost about $30. I would use an Abu Garcia 5600 or 6500 reel, about$85, loaded with 12 or 15# test mono. I like to fish with lite weight reels.
