I made mine from old telephone coiled cords, split rings, brass clip on one end and a strong snap (like on a fish finder rig) on the other. Use a nylon tie with a small split ring at the bottom of the reel seat, snap onto the split ring and attached the brass snap to boat/rod holder, whatever suits you. I doubled the phone cord over the spilt ring and bound it with SS wire like a whip finish.

You can get 20ft of phone cord for 99cents from most discount stores(ODD JOB or MACES Closeout City). Then buy a few brass clips from Home Depot. Heres a link with step by step pictures on how to put it all together:

When I made mine I used the brass clips on both ends of the phone cord and they work great. I haven't lost any of my rods/reels or boga grip using the phone cord leashes.

FLYRODDER has the fancy solution. For me, I just have some nylon twine, melted the ends until I had a mushroom head, and using a tautline knot at both ends, I was done.

Here's another idea (one that I have not made yet). Some yakkers like to fish unleashed/tethered while they have the rod in their hands and vice versa when they troll. To make this easier, I was gonna use the car key release that I get from the local hardware store for a couple of bucks. It's made of brass and is chrome plated. It looks like a cylinder with the two large split rings at both ends and you separate them by pushing a little spring loaded button on one end of the cylinder. Internally, pushing the button moves a shaft where a retaining BB can slide inward to allow the two pieces to separate. Hope you get the picture.
