Al:

I see some fishing reports from individuals who have been fishing Rockaway all winter, with success.

I need to know:

What makes Rockaway special? Is the water warmer there? If so, why? Are there any other factors that make this a successful spot.

I only ask because I have beach access in every direction where I live (Connecticut)and I don't see anybody fishing, nor do I see much bird action.

Thanks,

Any fishing running south along the southside of
LI (instead of the Sound) that wants to make it's
way up the Hudson has to make the turn in at
Rockaway. Even fish hugging the shore running
further south even pass there. There are good
jetties, sand bars and rips for foraging. Jamaica
Bay has also been on a major come back from
pollution as well. I believe there some other
places a little further south holding over some
bass. The weather so far this fall/winter has kept
the water temps unusually warm, a major

Soundfisher,

That?s a very good observation!

Here are some of the reasons why Rockaway area is so productive?

First of all? there is a big bay with lots of marshes (Jamaica) that holds an incredible amount of bait! Secondly, It?s shallow and keeps the water temp. warmer than usual? Thirdly, the Hudson (nursery ground) and East River outflow spills down to the first big and rocky jetty (Point)! If you combine these factors ? it is a perfect fish hangout spot!

If you get a good overview of the area, you will get a better picture! ;)
