rigging false albies for shark

I caught a few false albies and have them sitting in the freezer. I know they are good shark bait because they are very bloody and oily.Im not really shure which is the best way to rig them? Double hook set up on the whole fish or fillets? ( fish are probably about 8-10 lbs.)

Devonaiko,
Your best bet is to fillet the fish. A simple single hook shark rig will do fine. I like to freeze the fish whole and fillet when I need the bait because I think the baits stay nicer. The problem is, whole albies can take up a lot of room in your freezer.

Devonaiko,
Herring are probably better for chunk bait or tuna bait, but you could try a few for sharking. Either way, when you are catching herring and false albies, fill a cooler with ice, salt water and kosher salt and put your fish in the brine as you catch them. They will freeze a whole lot better this way.

Devonaiko,
congratulations on a really good blue shark! There are some real monsters out there this time of year.. The problem is, when you hook one of these giant blue dogs you have to play it like the real deal until you are positive it is a blue shark...and that can waist time. I have had 300+ blue sharks scream line off the reel as they run to the horizon and 300+ makos that go deep and wrap themselves in the leader. Fall sharking is a little different than it is in the spring...everything seems to be large!

Devonaiko,
If I had a blue shark that I honestly thought was a new all tackle record, I would kill the fish. I would not however kill a big fish because it was my personal best or to just take pictures at the dock. I think you did the right thing.

You can catch them into December some years. One big problem is that the dog fish will start becoming so thick that they will swarm the boat. At this point I usually live line the dog fish, but it can become frustrating at times.

I had an 8 foot blue shark I weighed in a tournament some years back and it weighed 125lbs.( I realize some are more girthy than others.)

I was just looking over my old log books and found a blue shark I caught about 15 years ago. That shark was 17 feet long and weighed 46lbs.

I just found
another blue shark in my log book. This fish was 2 1/2 feet long and weighed 327lbs.

PS Keep it coming fellas this stuff is great!!!
Makoman 16,
I had four makos one day this summer and they didn't add up to ten feet !!!

MakoMatt,
Congratulations!!! A job well done!!
I'm glad to hear that they don't rely on the information on those cards we all send back. I'm fishing with a guy one day and he is filling out the "condition of the fish" part of the card as excellent. This was right after he just tagged the shark thru the eye!

Slimshady,
If you don't have anything argumentative to say, don't say anything at all!!! Just kidding...LOL Congratulations on your first post...and a good post at that!! This is a long way off from rigging false albies for shark!!
