I caught a few false albies and have them sitting in the freezer. I know they are good shark bait because they are very bloody and oily.Im not really shure which is the best way to rig them? Double hook set up on the whole fish or fillets? ( fish are probably about 8-10 lbs.)

Devonaiko,
Your best bet is to fillet the fish. A simple single hook shark rig will do fine. I like to freeze the fish whole and fillet when I need the bait because I think the baits stay nicer. The problem is, whole albies can take up a lot of room in your freezer.

Tanks for the reply. Ill try it like that. Has anyone used live herring as shark bait, theres tons of it in the bay. I might jig some up before I go. They sure work well for bass, I cant see why they wouldnt work for shark?

Devonaiko,
Herring are probably better for chunk bait or tuna bait, but you could try a few for sharking. Either way, when you are catching herring and false albies, fill a cooler with ice, salt water and kosher salt and put your fish in the brine as you catch them. They will freeze a whole lot better this way.

500 lb Blue shark

Went out to the 25 fathom fingers today. Didnt get a chance to eat my egg sandwich. Right after we set up, reels were screaming all day long. numerous hook ups including a blue shark we faught for over 2 hrs on 50lb tackle. The fish was about 14ft long and had to be around 500lbs, I know beceause it was 1/2 the length of my 30ft boat. Never saw one that big.The bait of choice was albie fillet and herring a close second. No makos, but a **** of a day.

Devo and the 500lber.

Hey Devo a 14ft blue is not 500lbs. Yes that is a big fish but I have thought the same as you and had 1 15 to 16 ft and it was just shy of 400lbs. when there that big it is hard to judge the weight because the grith is a key factor. But till they are on the scale it's a rough call.

Devonaiko,
congratulations on a really good blue shark! There are some real monsters out there this time of year.. The problem is, when you hook one of these giant blue dogs you have to play it like the real deal until you are positive it is a blue shark...and that can waist time. I have had 300+ blue sharks scream line off the reel as they run to the horizon and 300+ makos that go deep and wrap themselves in the leader. Fall sharking is a little different than it is in the spring...everything seems to be large!

Togmaster,
You are right, it is hard to judge the weight.I only say 500lbs because the area right behind the head was so big, I wouldnt be able to put my arms around it. All I know is that I feel like I went a round with Mike Tyson, I'll be ready for round 2 in a few days. Does anybody think you should bring in a fish like that. I was wondering, but I didnt think it was the right thing to do?

Devonaiko,
If I had a blue shark that I honestly thought was a new all tackle record, I would kill the fish. I would not however kill a big fish because it was my personal best or to just take pictures at the dock. I think you did the right thing.

You can catch them into December some years. One big problem is that the dog fish will start becoming so thick that they will swarm the boat. At this point I usually live line the dog fish, but it can become frustrating at times.

Mako matt where did you get that chart?

Hey Matt that chart is way off base man. I have seen 8 ft blues just make 125lbs.Just look at the shark tourneys in the area everyone always brings in sharks way below the min weight! This is because of false info like the chart you got. I have had Blue dogs in the canyon which looked better then 14 ft but 500 lbs. is a big blue dog, weight is not told by length alone that is why the Mako at such a short length will be heavier then other sharks. Funny but many sharks can be deceiving when looked at. When we had a 820 lbs Mako at gone fishing in 1995 it looked like a 1000lbs fish and we were 200 lbs. off. So sometimes the weight can be very deceiving like I said but your chart is way off base man. The local shark tourneys have a very similar chart which is why so many sharks are taken in tourney?s . This is a sin in my eyes and wish a better judgment would be brought to the attention of shark tourney leaders!

Thanks Capthookem & Togmaster!

Thanks Capthookem & Togmaster for helping me prove my point that the figures in that website are totally incorrect. I would say an 8-foot blue dog is 115-150. But it certainly isn't 210 (as the website claims)! I have seen 13-footers ~ weighing under 300, not over 500 according to that terrible table on that website!

Let me just say this, besides that chart ~ I love the website. Especially the MAKO photos. They have 12 photos of makos over 800 pounds! Awesome!

Well guys, are you sure you are measuring your sharks length correctly? Where from, fork length or overall? Remember something too about sharks in our area, esp. Blue Sharks, when they come up here and you catch them in the early part of the season they are more often then not, lean, sometmes very lean. However, most of the time when you catch them around now, they are MUCH larger from feeding well all summer. Tog, you have caught a lot of sharks so I'm sure you know what the term "shoulders" mean. Makoman16, when did you catch that skinny little fish, in the Spring?

I went digging through some old files and found my original stuff sent to me by N.M.F.S. for the Cooperative Shark Tagging Program. I have listed below what they sent concerning Blue Sharks. I think you know the amount of data they have collected on sharks, esp. Blue Sharks, they make up the VAST majority of tagged fish.

Blue Shark - Fork Length

8' 209 lbs.
8 1/2' 253 lbs.
9' 303 lbs.

Tog, by the way, they show a Mako in your 820 size range as:

10' 732 lbs.
10 1/2' 853 lbs.

Remember this too, how often do you weigh Blue sharks?? Not too often these days, so remember we all probably forgot a lot about what they weigh when you just look at them.

Tog, I assume the tournament you are refering to, or one of them anyway was this years Hudson Anglers where the White Kap took 1st. Place with, if I remember correctly, a 285 Blue. Long, thin, fish, a springtime fish. They look even longer and thiner hanging.

I have reviewed the information that N.M.F.S. sent me concerning Mako length/weight and listed some of that below. It looks pretty good to me, I can concur with them on that, so I am assuming thier accuracy can also be found with Blue sharks. Again, it's hard to comment too much, I don't usually weigh Blue Sharks.

Mako - Fork Length

5' 83 lbs.
5 1/2' 112 lbs.
6' 147 lbs.
6 1/2' 189lbs.
7' 239 lbs.
7 1/2' 297
8' 363 lbs.
8 1/2 439 lbs.

Captainhookem, look at those Mako weights above, 297 and 439. Didn't you have exactly a 297 and a 440 last year? Did you measure the fish??
