My steering cable's been pretty stiff for a couple of years. It works but getting tighter each season. Last time out, while underway at slow speed (5mph) the wheel started to "knock". That is if you turned it to 10 O'clock it would come to a stop, more pressure on the wheel would then turn it fully. It did this the rest of the morning.

Then, when I backed down into my slip, I heard another knock and the wheel seams to now be "stipped" only turning the outboard one direction. I think the problem is the box behind the wheel inside the console but I think I should replace the whole kitten kaboodle as this was put in new in 1987. Lord knows it's time.

Thoughts on how easy a job it is to run a whole new mechanical system for somebody who's decent mechanically. The boats a 1981 Sea Ox 17' CC.

Appreciated.

It's pretty straight forward, really...

Take a look under your dash at your old steering box, and see if you can get the same one, so it'll bolt right in. And you need to measure your cable, so you know what length you need.

The hardest part will probably be removing the old cable from the engine bracket, which has been discussed before on this message board...

Besides that, it's just pulling the cable out of the boat, removing the old steering box from the back of the dash, bolting up the new box, install new cable, and you're done.

Replacing the steering shouldn't be an issue with the CC.

I replaced my rack steering with the Safe-T NFB No Feed Back system. It's nice and compact and works great
The engine torque will not move the wheel if you let go........

Very easy to change..........
