Capt. Neil I have a rod that has some damage to the butt wrap nothing to bad just some scratches and small nick's.
I would like to do it over, new wrap that is.
How would you recommend removing the old finish and thread? Razor blade, should I heat the old finish first.

thks,

Hi,

If the wrap itself is not damaged you can float a coat of epoxy over it and it will look like new. Just lightly sand the area and clean with alcohol first.

If you also want to remove the wrap I would do it this way.
Use an alcohol burner to heat the finish to the point a single edge razor will penetrate the finish and thread. Do not over heat as it is possible to cook certain blanks. Slide razor as flat as possible between the thread and blank. Do Not dig into the blank. Re use heat as necessary. If necessary fine grit paper can be used to smooth the blank.

Now you can float a thin coat of finish or just start wrapping.

Let us know how you make out.
