I'M READY TO PAINT THE BOTTOM OF MY BOAT, BUT FOR SOME REASON THIS YEAR I HAVE A LOT OF BARNACLES MOSTLY TOWARDS THE BACK END OF MY BOAT.

SOME ARE PRETTY BIG !!!

ANY TYPE OF PRODUCT I CAN USE TO REMOVE THEM OR WHATS THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE THEM. I TRIED POWER WASHING BUT NO GOOD.

ALSO WHY ARE THEY ATTACHED MORE TOWARDS THE REAR SECTION OF THE BOAT AS OPPOSED TO THE FRONT.

ONE MORE THING: THE PAINT I HAVE IS A FEW YEARS OLD NOW, IS IT STILL OK TO USE.
OR SHOULD I PURCHASE NEW PAINT AND WHATS A GOOD BRAND / TYPE THESE DAYS.

THANKS GUYS TPBEACHRAT.

New Paint

I've never really had extensive barnacle growth on my hull, but I would think that something was up with your paint to begin with for that to happen.. Scrape the bulk of the critters off with a metal paint scraper, and the rest will sand off when you get done sanding the hull. Ditch the old Paint!!!! I would sand the hull way down, and since you have new paint to buy, spring for the Microlux ablative paints that are now out... These flush away slowly over time, so you dont have to scrape and sand between coats, you can just roughen and retouch as needed. The barnacles sound kinda ominous... Bad paint...BAD! Mess you up!

Use Mary Kate barnacle remover. Brush it on with a chip brush wait 20 minutes and gently scrape it off. No effort needed.

It is an acid, so make sure you don't get it on your skin and clothes. I have plenty of experience using this product because my boat sits in very low water at low tied. Once August comes around I have to short haul my boat weekly to power wash the bottom to avoid what you have. Lucky for me I have an in with my marina staff.

You might be using the wrong paint, You should use an ablative paint that is soft and wears away at a fast rate that you repaint every season.

A harder paint like the micron will last longer and wear away slower but can get more growth, good thing is it does not need to be painted every season, micron is good if you use the boat regularly, I am going to try it this year. You can also take the boat out of the water and put it back in, you cant do that with the ablative paint.

I have heard of putting cayenne pepper (the powder form) in with the paint but never tried it myself.

Just the opposite, boats painted with hard bottom paints generally should not be taken out of the water for any long perios of time, ablatives can keep their anti-fouling properties even after winter storage.

Latty is right this stuff works great!! I dont let it sit that long and it scrapes right off. Make sure you rinse good and dont get it on you.
Alot easier that using easy off oven cleaner.

Every week????
Oh man thats gotta be a PITA....
It's not that bad, It gives me a reason to be where I'd rather be. I usually head down there after work, with a few cold ones and a couple bucks for the lift operator. So far so good, I always seem to catch them before they get the size of an eraser head. Someday they will finish dredging.
