Why am I not Suprised that the politicians from New York & CT can not get their acts together.
When fishing out of greenwich I cannot fish for porgys because the season is closed but the boat 10' away can because they are from Portchester. We share the same waters lets share the same regulatiions. Wake up DEC's and smell the bunker

I agree with you that the two States should get their acts together. However, you are greatly mistaken about how the regulations are enforced.

THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THE PORT OF ORIGIN. CT REGS APPLY IN CT WATERS. NY REGS APPLY IN NY WATERS.

If a boat from NY keeps porgies in CT waters when the season is closed, call your local DEC enforcement because those anglers are breaking the law.

Its where the boat is caught. If that NY boat is fishing in CT waters but make it back to NY waters before they are boarded then there is no infraction. Boats must be caught breaking the rules within that specific area. Another example is this: Fluke season closes for NY state at the end of October, BUT Federal law closed fluke Oct 1
in federal waters. (Most fed waters are at about 60ft depths off the south shore) Well as we all know most fluke were being caught 50 -70ft depths which were in fed waters. So if a boat made it back to less then 3 miles offshore than they would have nothing to worry about. Now how ridiculous is that?

Guys, This gets even more confusing. After talking to the NYS DEC Marine fisheries division I have been informed that the laws state that if the season is over for a certain fish in (lets say porgys in CT) and if your boat is based in CT you cannot bring any porgys back to Ct waters EVEN IF THEY WERE CAUGHT IN NY WATERS. You are in volation of possesion laws. I think its time that we petition both states for a compromise law that would make things easier for all of us sportsmen who want to follow the laws.

Unfortunately for those of us that fish waters where two or more states come together, it will always be confusing. Probably shouldn't be. Where I fish the most near Fishers Island and Watch Hill all three states waters come together and it can be a nightmare. In talking with Rhode Island and my home state of Connecticut , it is easiest said that the catch (fish) that you have on board must be legal on whichevers states waters you are on. This applies to season , length and posession limits. Even if you are passing thru waters not your own. It matters not from where you launched.
The need to know your neighbors laws is paramount. Please be aware that just because you are not caught does not mean that you have not broken the law. We all need to police ourselves. I too would like to see comprehensive laws. We can hope. Thanks OUTLAW
