I have always traveled with smaller inshore gear and never had a problem checking in my stuff. With heavier more expensive tackle, should I still check it in and do I even have an option. I have heard that they won't let you carry on reels but I have in the past. Other times they've made me take my line off the reel. Flying to Texas next week what should I do and how should I store them??

What are your experiences?

Just came back from California and always carry my reels with line on them onboard with me. Called american airlines last time i flew to find out the answer they weren't sure so I called homeland security and they told me that it was OK to carry on reels with line attached. They even pointed me to there website where it said id was ok. Go to the following link.

Print that page from the TSA website and put it in your carry-on bag. If they give you any problems just show them the page. The rules are very clear.

This is true.
A co-worker works PT with TSA @ JFK and he told me the samething.
Print it out.

I took my reels in my carry on when I went to Cozumel last March and had no problems. I even had to take 2 planes there and back cause I couldnt get a direct flight.

Shouldnt have a problem.

angelo - just carry them unless you've already got a bunch of carry-on items. if so then ship them to me as well.

the xray will light up like times square....but most of the time they just make a comment like "wow someone's going fishing!" and that's the end of it.

Excellent info I was just wondering if it would be a problem.
What are the rod length's they typically allow as carry on?
Thats disputable.
Cause they'll tell you only carry on what can fit under the chairs or in the over heads. Then if you put it in travel tubes and it's over 7', get ready to possibly pay.

It depends on what airlines you fly.

Hey Angelo,

I brought back a buncha reels from japan and korea a couple of weeks ago and it was no problem. I got a little crap about the shimano screwdriver/wrench they put in the box but other than that they checked the inside of the luggage and sent me on my merry way. You should be all good

A few years ago, while traveling back from Cabo a friend had a problem. Had to connect through Mexico City leaving Cabo and my friend had to strip all line off his reels before they'd let him through security. Point is different countries may have different rules. TSA rules don't necessarily apply to domestic flights in other countries.
