I was looking at the DEC regs page and they list Redfish @ 2 greater than 32".
I was wondering if anyone out there knows how viable a Redfish fishery there is in NY. I always thought of them as a more southerly species. Anyone ever caught any locally? Thanks in advance.

Red Drum

Can be found as far north as Maine. They are not as common around here as they are south of the Cheasapeake but they are around. I have never caught one up here but I have fished for them down south and they are alot of fun to catch with a fly. I wonder if there is a NY record for one?

Another surprise.

Cobia is on the list as well. I have never heard of Cobia being this far north. I would love to know the last time one was caught in this area.

Then again they caught a tiger shark of amity island. Or was it a Maaco?

I have seen a cobia caught on an NJ head boat and there was also one caught off the Keansburg pier last year. While not common, it seems like there are rumors of them being caught every summer. Heck, they caught a snowy grouper on the Jamaica last month...

Redfish are occasionally taken in Delaware bay, I know there was a picture of one taken last year. I also believe the NJ state record tarpon was broke last year in the Cape May rips. All depends on how warm the water gets.

Redfish used to be very common in Jersey, especially in the southern parts. They are caught from the surf in the fall occasionally and seem to get more common every year.

Cobia are more common then people think. They're like Amberjacks. If you know where to look, i.e. bouys, flotsam, etc.. you should find some, especially late in the summer.

Skirtchaser,

That thing about the 2 big Tarpon being caught off Cape May a couple years ago was BS. They found out the guy caught them off VA. They still come up occasionally when the water warms up though.

I'm in South Jersey, so I don't know what it's like farther north where most of you are from..

One of my buddies at work has a nice picture of a cobia he caught in the Sound from the beach out east, this past summer.

I have also heard of a tarpon caught off of Cranes Neck two or three years ago, and I've heard divers say they've seen them in Moriches Inlet.

Other than that, I can't say I've ever seen one of either of them up here. And I've never heard of reds around LI.

I seem to recall a report of a tarpon in the fifty pound class caught at the Montauk lighthouse on a bunker chunk. I think between 96 and 99 when I had my boat out there. Can't remember if they had a picture of it.

I just check NJ records and for Red fish it is 55lbs caught in 1985, and tarpon is 52lbs caught in 1982 so your right that those tarpon reports were fake.
I was in Charleston last year for redfish and my biggest was 22lbs caught on 12lbs test, they are great fighting fish. I am going to Deleware bay for black drum this year, I hope they fight just as good.
