Recreational Lobstering

Hello Guys,

Finished restoring a lobster trap I found on the beach in Montauk, was almost brand new, threw it in the truck, now I would like to throw it out on days/nights when I'm out camping...

I know you need a permit abnd have some questions if anyone knows:

1. Where can I get the permit? (not selling them, personal use)

2. Is there a season and when does it start/end?

3. I have Atlantic herring in the freezer, I know this is a good bait but what else works well when I deplete the herring?

Any advise is surely appreciated..

The rec/lob thread is in the LIS fourm, but you should read this too:

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7894.html

5 pot max for recreational fishers
6 lobsters per day
Note: there are 2 different carpice sizes in NYS. LIS area 6 has a 3 5/16" and in the Atlantic ocean area 4 we let the lobster gorw a little bigger to 3 3/8" before harvesting.
There is:
no season
no soak time
Pots must be:
properly marked with name and permit #
Bait:
herring= lobster candy

fresh buker= my choice because of price and availability, bait pucks and fish racks second choices.

If you found a pot on the beach, it should of had the fishermans and his boats name on a tag in the pot. The right thing what should be done is to give a jingle
and try to return the pot.
