Cabin fever is setting in already and heading South doesn't seem like it's in the cards this year, so, anyone have any recommendations for a head boat, day trip, for Cod in January, any L.I. Port would be fine.

These days, day trips really don't cut it for cod. They catch a few here and there, but its nothing special. If you're gonna do it, go all out and do an overnight wreck cod trip on the Helen H and catch them until your arms fall off.

The Capt. Mark sails outa Montauk as a head boat(really a charter boat, I believe 6 pass. limit)starting in Feb. He supposedly did well last year fishing SW of Block Island. The way I believe he does it is IF he can sail he will call around to get up the anglers needed. You must but your name on his list and when available. Yes it's short notice but should be an enjoyable trip, not having 50 people puking all over the place! Lotsa room-39'BHM, and friendly atmosphere. A little expensive I'm told but should be a good time. Unless you are going out every week the trip should be reasonable. I'm listed with him for some cod trips and snowshoe flounder trips later in the year. I've fished with him many times for bass, fluke, blacks, tuna, porgies,and seabass and have never been disappointed! Maybe i'll see you on one of the trips!

Hipshot....thats a great alternative for guys who cannot make the run upto Rhode Island to fish the Francis Fleet or the Cape to fish the Helen H.

They did happen to have some fish off Montauk in Feb. last year, and hopefully if the weather settles down, a few boats can get out and see if any fish settled up on the spots south of Block and other areas.

This is the best way to fish a charter boat in the winter....the Captain sees a window in the weather, gives you a call, and you go out. Cannot beat that.
