Can't help you with the 500, but I have the DS400X on my boat with a transom mount. Personally, I love it. I have no trouble seeing fish, bait, etc. Since this was my first color unit, it took a while to learn what I was looking at. But once it was explained to me, everything was a clear as day. Very nice unit. The one drawback with the transom mount is the plastic mounting bracket. It has a snap into place feature. Last year when my boatyard launched the boat, They hit the ducers with the forks and popped it up. Of course, this is what is supposed to happen in case you hit something in the water. But what a PITA to get the thing locked back down with the boat in the water.

I had the raymarine 600 on the whaler I just sold and it was a great unit but had to let it go with the sale of the boat.
I just bought the furuno fcv-585 for this boat. If I was you I would
look at the Furuno 620 I have been told this is a better unit for the same price as the raymarine 500.

Raymarine DS500X

A good unit for the Money and it has a 2 year warrenty from Raymarine. Some of the features of this unit are better than others on the market but most never learn the unit enough to really know it's full potential. I am a Pro-staff member for Raymarine and I have used just about every type of Fishfinder/sounder on the market, not to mention I sell Marine Electronics in the winter for a Marine Retailer. I can honestly say with the Raymarine DS500X you will not be disappointed.

Just trying to help!!!Good luck

Can't help you with the raymarine, but i would suggest looking at the furuno fcv 620/585- they're awesome. Mike's got a 585 in the new steiger it's going to be amazing.

Nope just hookin up my fathers boat. the 620 furuno is what i want but space is limited and few its a few more bucks. the digital picture on the raymarine is awesome, iv used it on my buddies boat but that was with the thru hull i just hope im not disappointed with the transom mount. but for inshore fishin should work fine with the 500watts. anyone else use this one?
