Weather and fish

I fished the south side at heather hills all during the weekend. it was impossible to fish, I was knee deep and got hammered by a rogue wave, it is definetly dangerous, Those guys on the rocks during that weather are nuts, no fish is worth dying for.

No no no. No way no how can you catch fish in the rain and wind!

Um, lets see. The fish don't like to get wet and the rain drops hitting the surface confuses them ;)

I attended one of Bill Wetzels seminars over the winter. I remember him saying that when the first Nor'easter rolls in, in September, call in sick, and get your a$$ to Montauk. Well this year it came on labor day weekend.

Driving out there in the wind and rain I was seriously questioning my decision but it payed off big time with my best day in the surf so far. Fising on the North side right into the wind, it was rough but well worth it.

Now, I look foward to the rain and fog if I'm on the boat, and for some wind too if I am in the surf. It moves the bait and the fish and keeps the crowds away. With the colder water or maybe because of some extra oxygen in the water from the waves, the fish seem to be fiester as well. I caught a few bass last Friday night from the shore, in the Northeast wind and rain. They all took a pencil and leaped clear out of the water with it and I had a usually crowded place, all to myself.

I forgot to add...

Use good judgement when fishing in the waves. If it is too rough into the wind during a Nor'easter fish the South Shore beaches and inlets. Don't risk your life for a fish.

We are in the middle of the fall run...Get you sorry ass down to the surf. Rain, sleet, wind, hail,Stripers love this stuff.
But don't be a DumA$$, stay off the rocks and don't wade out too far if it looks brutal

I took my "sorry ass" out last night... follow up to my 1st post

Well, I got my waders on and hit under the RM bridge last night around 8 PM. Found 4 other casters using assasins and live eels. I used eels for about 30 minutes before the weeds made it worthless. 2 of us left the inlet after that.

I went to Sunken Meadow, just to find all the toll gates blocked off. Went to Crabmeadow and tossed live eels for an hour and half up and down the beach. The Sound was beginning to howl by ten, 2 guys caught 1 porgy off the point.

Decided to try Cold Spring Harbor's protected flats w/ live eels and pencils. Saw some splashing of possible schoolies, but no takers. Tons of glass shrimp in the water though. Left at midnight, so there's my story. It's just a matter of time before I hit paydirt.

Just FYI--the toll gates at Sunken Meadow are ALWAYS blocked off at sunset. Just go around them--there's a driveway to the right, posted with an "Authorized Vehicles Only" sign. With the Night Parking or 4x4 permit, you are an "authorized vehicle".

slnaja...eels at Crab Meadow?

I was just curious. Have you taken many bass on live eels at Crab Meadow? I fish it often and have never heard of or seen anyone slinging eels. I just never found it to be a killer method on the north shore beaches.

To Windcatcher & Chumface

Thanks for the gate tip. I've got a permit, but I've never gone there after 9 PM before.

As for eels, I've never heard of eels at Crabmeadow working, butI've only seen 1 person there score with worms- all other info is via reports. Plus, that's the bait I had, and I figured my chances with eels on the north shore would be best during a fall run when the bass are hungry.
