I just moved to Deer Park from Long Beach. I've been doing some research about the local surf fishing here in Suffolk I've come to the conclusion that the following parks are a good starting point: Caumsett, Crab Meadow, Makamah, Callahan's, and Sunken Meadow. What is access like? Do I need a permit? Let me know.

Thanks

Well I have only been to caumsett and sunken meadow. The only time that I have been to caumsett was a few years ago in the spring. I was able to buy a 24 hour pass that was pretty inexpensive. Went real early in the season and caught one schooly. I have been to sunken meadow a few times without much look but I have seen people there with a bnch of good size bluefish up on the beach. I have also heard that the bluefishing can be great over there with some bass mixed in. I know you need the night fishing permit to be in there at night but you dont need anything during the day except there is probably a small fee to get in.

Hope this helps. Let me know how you do if you give these parks a shot.

Caumsett requires a permit. The season ones are sold out. But they give out 24 hour passes for a low amount.

Sunken Meadow, I believe is accesible with the NY State fishing permit. The same one that gives access to RM, Jones, Montauk and other areas.

Can someone suggest a method of obtaining these passes? Can you do it on-line? At the guard shack?

Thanks.

seems like the residents near Makamah are getting thier way.. after fishing it for almost 30 years, I got my b's busted by SCPD.. my taxpaying dollars at work, guy sat in the lot for 2 hrs talking to some lady.. came over and said "This is for Huntingtin town residents only.."

Sign out front only says park open 8-8.. one of the last free parks to fall to the rich, but I'll be biking in from a legal parking spot somewhere, they can't ticket a 10-speed

NYS night fishing permits (Sunken Meadow, et al) you can get at RM park police office by the fishing piers. Better hurry, you got till the end of April, then that's it till sometime in Sept. I think.
Is it true that permits are only issued to vehicles with 4 wheel drive, or am I confused with beach access permits (or are they one and the same)?
