Im thnking of possibly doing a trip on the VIKING / the SUPER HAWK/ or the CAPTREE PRINCESS . if they do the trips . I was just looking for recomandations for theses trips as I do not have experiance . Are these trips sucsessfull I cant see spending 500$ and change and not enjoy the trip.Wich boat would be recommended . And it also states on the Viking trip to bring sabiki pole ,rigs, a spinning set up with braid and lots of rigs and wights . I could problbly purchase all the required eqiptment but the divorce lawyer would put me in the poor house . Is all of the equiptment absolutly necesarry or is it just recommended ??? Well thank you in advance .. Tight lines

I've done a bunch of party boat tuna trips in the past and the Viking Starship is by far the best route.

The Starship is a 140' animal.
Bunk style sleeping quarters belowdecks.
Lash your coolers outside on the benchs along the rail and grab some reclining chairs inside for your gear bag & rear end for the ride.

Capt Steven is a legend and puts you on meat.
Bring a tilefish rod, just in case...

The galley turns out top notch grub to pack down. Kobi cooks like a champ!

The boat trolls like 20 rods during the day, with outriggers no less! You "buddy up" on a rod and switch off every 30 minutes.

Viking Starship all the way...

Check out the Helen-H out of Hyannis....i have been on their 3 day trips the past 3 years and we have hammered em. The 3rd day gives you a much better chance of getting into the fish since you have all that extra time to find em.

Capt. Joe rocks!

Capt Steve on the Viking

Boat, Capt, and Crew can't be beat. I and Diane are booked on the Sept 19th 3 day limited passenger Tuna Trip. Heres a short list of what you'll need for the trip. Feel free to PM me if you want additional details.
1)30 or 50 2 speed (i like the 50 myself) loaded with 80-100 lb test.

2)Heavy duty Jigging setup (must hold at least 300 yds of 80 lb braid).

3)med to heavy action spinning outfit (for mahi).

4)lite spinning rod (10-12lb test) and assorted Squid jigs.

5)The usual selection of hooks/Rubberbands/jigs/leader material ect,ect.

6)Almost forgot, you will need a few trolling lures as well.

bilellaant, a good budget jigging reel would be the Penn 4/0. Maybe Kilsong will see this and respond, or ask up in the jigging forum. You would want to spool it with a braided line/mono topshot.

A jigging set up is a nice thing to have but by no means necessary. Considering you're new to this and you're not a fanatical jigging specialist in all likelihood the time you spend jigging will be measured in minutes, not hours. I've gone many trips without really doing much jigging at all and a large number of people on the boat won't be set up for serious jigging. What I'm saying is if you're watching your cash skip the jig stick for round one and just get a feel for what goes on on one of these trips and buy one down the road when you have a better idea of what you're looking for.

As for trolling lures the VIking really beefed up their selection over the last two seasons and I hear they have a bunch of new high quality lures for this year too. So don't worry about spending a fortune on trolling lures you may only use once.

So to answer your original question - is all this stuff necessary - the answer is no, it's recommended.

If your budget is basically zero then go with a rod rental (I don't recommend it but plenty of fish get caught on rentals), use the boat lures, buy a diamond jig from Kobi if it looks like a lot of fish are coming on the jigs and you feel like giving it a shot, and save a bunch of dough. The one truly essential thing they don't sell or rent on the boat is high quality squid jigs and light spinning gear. When you have live squid life can be a lot better. Bring a light spinner, a few good quality (yozuri) squid jigs, some scent and you're set.

With all that said - I'm the biggest tackle ho out there and when I load up my gear on the viking I almost need to hire a moving company! Have a great time out there, you won't regret it for a minute.

Hi John

Glad to hear from you. Speaking of being a Tackle Ho Daine and i are figuring on bringing at least 14 outfits for this trip
. By next year well need a U-Haul-it just to get to the Viking (Lol). On a few of the Viking trips that i made for Tuna last year jigging (very early morning) resulted in a good number of Tuna on deck. Who knows what this year will bring but i would suggest that Bilellaant consider picking up a Penn 4/0. any decent Cod rod will work o.k.
Spool up with 80lb Braid add a topshot of 60-80 lb test and pick up a few Hammered Diamonds (properly outfitted of course). This way he's prepared if a jigging bite starts at 4:00 - 5:00 a.m. Theres nothing worse than being in the middle of a good jig bite and not having the equiptment to jump in on it.

Some more info...

I thought that the Viking was tunerin with the Star, either way, Steven is your best bet. For a first time "tuna dude" I suggest you live by this MUST READ thread, it has all the info on etiquette of party boat tuna fishing that is needed.
For tackle I suggest the following (after working deck on a tuna boat for over 13 years I have narrowed it down)
1 Shimano TLD 50 LRS (No need to "go gold" and these 2 speeds are $350ish) spooled with 60 or 80 lb mo-moi diamond (don't skimp on the line the mo-moi is the best the 80 breaks at 122lbs)married to an 80lb 6 Footstand up rod (my rods were custom so it is left to personal preference) 6/0-9/0 owner Hooks and flouro leaders in 40-130. Spro wind on swivels(200 lb) A "cod rod" with a 4/0 is fine for jigging get some hammered jigs and some metalic sardines, round the arsenal out with a 15 lb class spinner, this doubles for both Mahi and squiding (I like bucktails for the mahi and an assortment of squid jigs) For tiles use your jiggin rod and bring a reel loaded with spectra. (I know it's more involved than that but for his first trip......it's fine)
Trolling: Bring 2 lures a BIG Jet (trust me on this)
and a Braid Speedy plug.....

other things to bring but they aren't a necessity would be:
lead (from shots to 8 ozs)
rubber bands (no. 64)
balloons (to get a set bait away from the boat)
needle and rigging floss.
sabiki rigs
light sticks
a pre rigged wire Shark leader should "the man in the blue suit" make an appearance. Most of all, be a friggin sponge, ask questions, watch the mates and LISTEN.....any questions feel free to PM me....have fun

The Viking Star is the Boat. The Shimano you have will be fine for trolling and chunking. The crew prefers mono for those two applications, easier when there are tangles. An entry level jigging rod and reel would be nice, but not necessary. A Penn 113H, on a Shakespear 8' Ugly Stick is economical and effective. Also doubles for Cod. 80 lb. braid on the reel.
You HAVE to bring a squid rig. I use an old 5ft. ultra light trout rig I already had. Almost anything works for this, look in your garage.
Pink and green Yozuri jigs. A medium spinning rig for Mahi is nice, especially if your killing slow mid-day time, but not necessary again.
Many of us will recommend the Viking, because they work hard to put you on the fish. Aside from that, the boat has all the amenities that other boats just don't have. That creates a situation where it's easier to do a multi day trip. Don't hit the fish on the first day, move the boat some where else. For about the same price as you would spend on a six pack. One night.
Bring a pillow, an old blanket or sleeping bag, a big white cooler, and some food if you want. (Kobi cooks like Grandma) Maybe a change of clothes. After that trip, you can sneak in all your new tackle one piece at a time like the rest of us, cause you'll be hooked!
