Bought a rod & reel this evening with the proceeds from my birthday. Sports Authority gift certificates.
I get the opportunity to fish the Canyon once or twice a season.
(thanks Bennie)

So I was looking for a stand up rod & reel that I could chunk with during the evening when tied up.

Now remember - it will only be used once or twice a season so I don't need anything that's going to receive a tremendous amount of use. Bennie's boat is more then well equipped as it is. Just something to occupy the time ever now & then.

This is what I bought:
Rod
Shakspeare Tidewater BTW 56 SUR
5'6" (50 to 130 lb. line test)
2 roller guides
Reel - Penn 9/0 Senator 115L

1.) is this a good match?
2.) is it sufficent for the average size tuna I will come across?
3.) what test line do you recommend?
4.) was I stupid to buy as my wife suggests since Bennie has pretty much everything I might need anyway & what the **** do you need another rod & reel for?

There were a few more additional "spicy" comments made but children maybe reading this.

Gentlemen?

Reel - Penn 9/0 Senator 115L

Overkill for most chunking applications, it is like holding a anchor in your hand all night.

Since you state your friend has plenty of tackle for you to use, I would assume he has some big guns onboard.
Why replicate that size outfit with what you bought, when you could use his outfits, which I assume have better quality components. Personally I dont see the need to have a "duplicate" lower quality setup to whats onboard.
Why not get something different.

My suggestion, get a lighter setup to chunk with, this way you can have a "sporting" setup to use, and if you want to fish with heavier tackle, then use the gear on the boat.

Just my opinion.

Fishdud - 9/0 Senator went for $144

Toghole - thanks for the response. I do have a lighter set-up as well (Senator 4/0 with with a Penn 4/0 Senator Rod - not a stand up). I didn't think this set up would be able to work a decent size tuna. Rod is only rated for 30 to 50 pound test line. Small tuna/shark - yeah - anything larger I figured I'd get spooled or broken off.
Fiends boat is definatley equipped with much better quality stuff & bigger stuff. He's taken 600 pound bluefin with it.
Was just looking for something I could use to fill in some time close into the boat while the outriggers were out doing their outrigger thing.
Would a 6/0 Senator be more appropriate for this?

Any other comments/recommendations?

wader,

glad to hear you took your licks like a man. i think they were all trained in the same seminar. mine is still giving me a lashing over the no-head.

i think the points made above are all valid.

since you already have a 4/0, it probably made sense to go with the 9/0. you can always come back and pick-up a 6/0.

your point is that it is always fun to have your own tackle when going on a friend's boat. this gives the angler a sense of personal accomplishment. enjoy.

just make sure that everything is up to snuff. if you hook into the trophy bigeye of the night - your tackle better not fail you. this goes for rod, reel, line, knots, leader, swivels, hooks, etc.

I agree, it's always special when you catch fish on your own gear! I have been on a lot of charters where guys brought their own gear just for that reason, I have done it myself! You didn't pay a lot of money-ENJOY!!!

rod&reel

I caught my first real tuna,a yellowfin calculated to be around 125#,on a Penn 113HLW loaded w/ 40#mono,mounted on a Kunnan Hotrail rod. That was in 1988.
A few years ago,a friend invited me on a shark tourney,on the corporate boat,a 72'.I thought I would bring my best outfit with me,a Penn 50SW,with matching Tuna Stick. The captain told me to stow my light tackle outfit.
This just says it takes all kinds.
