Gentlemen:

I ordered one on back order a few weeks ago, it was delivered today and is waiting at home for me YIPIEEEEE. It is the 19.99 one that is IM 6 with Fuji Concept Guides.

I seem to recall Leprechaun recommending a Diawa Firewolf reel to match it with and was wondering what folks might think of a few other reels I am considering as an option for mine.

Any insights anyone might have would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for feedback as to the reels themselves (relative quality, etc) as well as how a given reel would feel (balance etc) when matched with the Lep Rod.

1. Pinnacle Coastal Power CR 30
2. Various Okumas
Classic 200 or 300
Convector CN 20L or CN20D
Magda MA 30DX
3. Shimano TR200 G
4. Abu 6500
5. Tica Pisces PC 200G (I already have this reel on another lighter rod)

I intend to use the set-up mostly for wreck fishing for tog and also for deep water fluking where a fair amount of lead is needed.

Thanks

Of the reels you mentioned I like the Shimano TR100G for that rod and for the applications you mention.

But why not just go with the Firewolf 27? Not hyper-expensive, but plenty robust - just like the rod you just bought. That would make a low-cost/high-performing setup for sure.

Plenty of capacity (Especially if you use a spectra braid) and just the right size for my hands.

I would have liked the Abu better, except you mentioned tog fishing - for which the Abu is ill-suited.

Those other Okuma/Marado/Pinnacle reels are nice but if they screw up a few seasons from now you may have a tough time finding parts. Let alone service.

For what you want - stick to Penn/Diawa/Shimano and you can't really go wrong.

Why bother with the Internet?

Why not go right over to a local shop and play "Touchy-Feely" with the different models and make a decision that way?

These reels are generaly not offered at any decent discount via Internet sales, and by the time you pay shipping, you might as well pay the sales tax right here on Lawn Guyland.

I like Causeway, right here in Wantagh.

Go see Bobby or my old co-mate buddy Mike and tell him Pete B/Leprechaun told you to take a look at those reels.

Mikey will hook you up.

I would like to rename the "Lep Sticks"

Since it was I who first used and coined the term "Lep Stick", I would like to redub that limber yet stout angling stick as follows...

"Lep's Shillelagh"

I believe this new moniker still keeps with the Irish origins of that endearing cudgel which our own "Lep" so graciously introduced to fellow Noreast members.

What say ye fellow members?

LkyLindy - who's the scarey-looking wench under your signature?

No self-respecting Leprechaun would go near that Strega. (Italian for witch).

Speaking of the Daiwa Firewolf 27, is that reel capeable of casting jigs? Or is it more suited for strictly up & down bottom fishing? I ordered a Lep Stick and will likely use it for throwing 3 & 4 oz jigs to bass & Blues in the fall when we go chasing the birds.

What other inexpensive baitcasting reels would do the job?

Thanks

RR - That reel is a bushing reel, no ball bearings on the spool spindle. Great simple reel for blackfish and chummin' bass, not super great for distance casting.

While this in and of itself doesn't automatically preclude that reel from being an effective caster, I would think there are better choices out there for the purpose you mention.

The Calcutta 400 or any of the Abu 6xxx series reels would fit that need better.

You can grab a few different versions of the Abu 6xxx reels for less than $50 on e-Bay ("But it Now"), all day long.

That by the way, is where I buy all my reels now.

But then with the length of the Lep stick at less than 6.5', either you better be a darn good caster or have a very quiet boat so that you can sneak up close to the fishies.

I was planning on looking at the Shimano TR200 at Causeway for double duty on a LEP STICK (for c-bass) and on an Ugly Stick BWC1120 (1-3 oz. 15-25 6' rod for fluke).I see they also have the Daiwa SL175H for $59.99. It is a lot heavier than the Shimano but would this be a decent match with both rods??
