Hi Folks,
I just got back from Pulaski (Salmon River) and want to inform you that it is prime season for the salmon run! My advice to you… Take advantage while the run is hot! The past few days we limited out everyday with multiple hook up (and breakoffs)! Two days ago I just broke my personal Salmon best with an 9wt flyrod with a 12lbs. tippet … the salmon weights 36 lbs. and the fight was spectacular! :)

Just wondering… How many of you taking advantage of this season's run -or- planning to do this someday?

Great fish. We were up there the about a week and a half ago. Great time. Saw a guy keep a 16 lb. Steelie he hooked in the back which wasn't too cool, but one of our friends got one that went 20 lbs and was legally hooked. Have not caught one myself yet, which puts them in the same category (unfortunately) as a bonito. Good luck to those heading up there, it's a blast.

Well, Crazy Al, great minds think alike! I just got back. Fished Oswego Thursday and did nothing. Fished middle Salmon River yesterday and had mutiple hookups, but not much luck landing. I was fishing for steelies, but it's still a little early for them, though I hooked three. I'm basically a bobber fisherman. I did land one nice salmon, my first legal hookup, and I couldn't believe how strong it was. I usually let my fish go and I did this one. But you know what, I am a steelie fanatic and will be back up there in a couple of weeks. Take care.

Hey Bud, how are ya? How's the freshwater fishing treating ya? All in all, it's tough to compare! A 38 lbs. fly fishing via wader & river… -or- 41 lbs. Striper from the surf with tough, rocky terrain.

Both brutes gave me lots of fighting pleasure and the real shakes. :)

Hello DaShark
OK… Pulaski is located Northeast portion of NY states (Near Lake Ontario). Exit 36 off the Interstate 81 approx. 5 ½ hours from New York City. Hope this helps. ;)

Hello [Billegan[/B]
I know what you mean! There is something about Steelhead fishing! Those fish are really beautiful and the fight is absolutely outstanding!!!!

There were are few steelies culled when I was out there and from the looks of it… this is a beginning of a great Steelhead run! :)

I love going up there, but only make it once a year. It's been fun getting to know the river and how the fish run. A Steelhead trip may be a possibility over the winter, but for now I'm focusing on all the migrating bounty that RI has to offer. If anybody has the chance to go, I'd do it. The town is over-run with fisherman, the tackle shops are open until midnight, and you're catching 20-40 lb. fish in a river than you can almost spit across. I never thought I'd like fishing with someone else 5 or 10 feet away, but this is great. You hook up, yell "fish on" and head down stream as it peels line off your reel. On top of all that, you get a ton of salmon meat for the winter......

Had a few things mixed up!!!

Hey Al,

Well I just got back yesterday from upstate. I wasn't going to Pulaski. I was actually closer to Oswego. Went up to Mexico, NY to fish the catfish creek. Water was way too low for a good run but I managed seven over four days. Two days went over to the Oswego river. Pretty crowded. couldn't manage to keep any on the hook there. I drifted some spawn sacks as well and dropped a few steelies and the biggest brwon trout I've ever seen anywhere. Left yesterday in torrential downpours so I bet the creek came up followed by the salmon. Despite low water, best fish was 25# plus (only had an old hand scale). Sitting around the fire at night was a blast watching those fish bull their way through 2" of water over rocks and logs. Even helped a few reach their destination and seeded the stream with the roe and milt of some of my keepers so when I go back in years to come they'll still be there. I'll post pictures when I get the film back. You guys are right about the steelies...they're magical I think. Tight Lines.

Hey Brown Trout,

Welcome back!

From the looks of it… you had a great time and the 25# plus salmon is quite an achievement given the tough conditions you had!

BTW: Looking forward to those picture postings!

Just wondering… How long do you think this year's Salmon run will last? ;)

How long will it last?

I was told around where I was the run comes pretty late sometimes. Mid Nov. often enough. The fish camp owner next door said he got a chinook once while fishing steelies in Feb. I'm sure it was a once in a lifetime kinda thing but who knows? The Nov. run info came from the owner of the land I was on and he's been fishing up there for 15 years. I may try to get back up there for the steelies if nothing else.

Hey Al, I have run a driftboat on the Salmon for several yrs and it is my experience that the run is pretty much done right about now. There may still be a few fish on beds but they are probably pretty beat up. Steelies are startin' up in earnest though. Glo bugs and estaz egg patterns sizes 8-10 in low water,4-8's if it's rippin. A good guy to call for "honest" info is Pat Mahoney at Salmon River Outdoors(315)298-5717 or 298-5108.Fished for and with him many yrs from NY to FLA;...a good man and he has "the gift" good luck
crazy one.
