Just ordered upgrade kits for my Abu reels from Smooth Drag and
was wondering if both sides of the Carbontex drag washers get the
light coat of Cals grease or only one side? How about the washer
under the main gear? Is there anything special to do with the thrust
washer? First time I'm doing this and have read a number of different
ways folks set these up. It is a bit confusing and I really want to
do it right the first time so any info on this subject is appreciated.

Both sides of every washer, including the one under the gear. Gently massage it in, a little bit at a time. You can stop when the washer's surface has an even oily sheen. Don't just slob Cal's grease on, you're not making a sandwich. Greasing the thrust washer may give it some added protection from corrosion, but it won't affect its performance one way or the other.

John is correct; I always wipe off the washer with a lint free cloth so as not to leave any "high spots" with the grease. The Cal's grease is also excellent on the gears!

Thanks for the replies guys. Those Smoothdrag folks are on the ball;
my order was in the mailbox when I came home from work today.
Two days to ship an order from California to Long Island; that's
what I call service. After hitting the Expo at Farmingdale tomorrow
I can put my time to good use over the weekend getting the reels
cleaned up.
