I just started teaching myself how to cast a fly rod a couple of days ago. I am practicing in my backyard and I am having the problem of the line making a cracking/whip noise when going from the backcast to the forward cast. Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it. Thanks.

Before you continue...

... tie a surgeons knot at the very tip of your line before you damage it. That whip cracking is what most get when they start. I remember my son when he was 4 cracking away and caught me in the ear!
You are not allowing the line to fully load back. When you draw back, watch the line roll and whip into a straight line behind you until all the line is straight. You should feel the line fully extend like a tug when completed. If you launch forward before allowing the line to extend, it will loop and crack like a whip. Same thing on the forward cast. Slow it down and don't worry so much about the distance. Worry about the timing. As you start feeding line into your cast you need to pause longer and longer each time. Let the line work for you and don't worry when it drops into the grass. Watch what it is doing. Slow is better. After you get the hang of it and past the basics you'll start using the reel hand to shoot the line for distance.
