Check this video out - Marlin eats a Mahi 10 feet from the boat. Pretty cool. Watch till the end for a cool jump as well. The commentary from the crew is entertaining as well.

About 8 years ago I actually saw this same thing happen. We were just north of the 100-Square and I was in the tunatower when I looked over to port and saw this marlin (400lbs+) come to the surface and whack a mahi with its bill, cutting it cleanly in half. Deffinitly one of the craziest things Ive seen offshore...

Never seen this myself but a few years back we where in the horns and heard a radio conversation. These guys where fighting a white near fishtails when all of a sudden a blue came up and bit it in half, swallowed half in one shot and came back up and took the other half. At the time i figured these guys where smoking a little too much something but i guess it does happen. thanks for posting . great vid

A hooked fish is a an animal in distress, and an easy meal for another predator. If you read about any of Hemmingway's fishing adventures you know that they often used machine guns to fend off sharks from attacking the Marlin or whatever they had on the hooked end of the line.

That must have been great, fighting a big Marlin while the crew is firing off rounds with the Tommy gun at large sharks chasing your fish!!!!!!

Doze was da days!!!

Taken from Allcoast

This happened in Kona on the last day of March 2008. Even big blue marlin are prone to attack from other predators.

From Capt.Jeff Rogers

"I did last month?s wrap-up a day before the end of the month and in last month?s report, the big news was Kona?s first ?Grander? of the year. The very next day after that report, last day of the month, another ?Grander? was caught. It was an awesome battle! I know because I was the captain on the boat! It?s a huge milestone for any captain to bag a grander and most Kona captains never attain the goal. A lot has to go right in order to get one. It really is a combination of skill and luck. We came close to loosing her a couple of times and then, once we had her subdued, we almost became a sad ?almost a grander? story. Three Oceanic white tip sharks attacked the marlin as we were trying to pull her in the boat. They took about 150 lbs. of meat off of her in about 1 minute but even with that, she still weighed in at 1056 lbs."

Lol, july 02 @ the dip , we where hitting quite a few nice size YFT But The birds where in real heavy and kept getting tangled in the lines while i was fighting one fish on the starboard side the rest of the crew was trying to untangle a bird from another line port side, all of a sudden the captain pulls a .45 and starts shooting toward the birds from the flybridge in a feeble attempt to scare them off
 needless to say we hit the deck pretty hard and i was suprised some of the crew did not end up in the water. I got some pics somewhere of the birds in the lines and will post em if i can find em

We lost a 40lb bluefin a few years back to a BIG mako, right in the prop wash. We only saw his back as he rifled across our stern to nail the bluefin in one bite. Of course, the 50lb mono leader went POP! instantly, but it was still pretty exciting. Just for laughs, we circled around to see if he was still in the area, and surprizely he came up to the troll in our prop wash again, right between two squid bars. Unfortunatly, we had no pitch bait ready on wire to drop back. This was at the northeast corner of the Dump in early July. You just never know what's going to happen some days!
