Press Release
AMBROSE LIGHT TO BE DECONSTRUCTED AFTER 41 YEARS OF SERVICE
NEW YORK-The deconstruction of Ambrose Light, situated about eight miles off the coast of Sandy Hook, N.J., in Ambrose Channel is scheduled to begin Monday, July 28, following extensive talks between the Coast Guard and local stakeholders.
"It was determined that Ambrose Light is not absolutely necessary to perform safe navigation through Ambrose Channel," said Chief Warrant Officer Darren Pauly, a Coast Guard Sector New York Aids to Navigation (ATON) officer. "Instead, several navigational aids will be added and Ambrose Channel will be extended to create a wider, more navigable channel for larger commercial vessels."
There will be no explosives used during the deconstruction. Divers will be conducting on-scene assessment of the anchorage and commercial harbor tugs Sea Wolf, Sea Bear and Miss Yevett will be assisting during the project.
The light's legs, stanchion, rotating light and anchorage were severely damaged following an allision with the commercial vessel Axel Spirit, a 799-foot tanker homeported in Nassau, Bahamas in Nov. of 2007. Personnel from Sector New York's Aids to Navigation Team established a temporary navigational aid after the allision while contractors assessed the damage to Ambrose Light.
"Ambrose Light has had three allisions since 1996. That is the main reason it is being replaced. It is not cost effective to rebuild the Light every time it is struck. With our improvements to the channel and newer Light-Emitting Diode (LED) technology, the optics on large buoys provide the same purpose and are easier to maintain," said Pauly.
The demolition comes almost 41 years after Ambrose Light was established.

Ambrose Changes

Hi Mike, there will be some major changes to the Ambrose entrance scheme extending the main entrance S.E. along with a southward scheme exiting at the "5&6" buoys which are proposed to be where the "1&2" are currently. Along with this I am most likely sure a weather buoy will be in place in the vicinity where the tower is. I am pretty sure it was included on the charlet. I had the final proposed charlet which we got in march but cannot find it and the local notice to mariners page is down at the moment. The Sandy Hook pilots are most likely playing a major advisory role and will push for a weather buoy if for some reason CG didn't. So I wouldn't worry about it. If I find the chartlet I will post it.

One thing that wouldn't hurt and would help the cause is for everyone viewing this to send in your opinions and concerns on including a weather buoy at the ambrose station to the Coast Guard via http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/lnm/d1/default.htm. Believe it or not they do read all inquiries and not only respond but take into consideration for these things also act as a safety mechanism. For example when they were gonna do away with the "KV" buoys racon I sent emails to them and they reconsidered and kept it.-Chris

Found it. I was right in my assumption. There will be a weather buoy placed 7nm from the Ambrose pilot station. In fact it should be more accurate with sea conditions than previous. Replacement ops were scheduled for last week.

Hey, Capt, can i get that web address from you

Ambrose Revision and Chart Info

The chartlet I posted was a direct email attachment to all the shipping and towing companies. There is no website for it that I know of.
When the changes are implemented it will be in the local notice to mariner which can be obtained at http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/lnm/d1/default.htm and corrected noaa charts printed there after. All up to date noaa raster charts can be viewed at http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/, charts 12326, 12327, 12401 are what you will be looking for.

Well maybe, during the demolition, the tower, crane and barge will all sink (with no injuries of course)and make a nice new drop for you guys......
I thought that was the original idea, sans the barge and crane.I heard they were gonna topple her.

Time will Only Tell

Chris it looks great on paoper but till it happens is another issue

Look at Ambrose the wave never worked right from the first day they put up the new tower. So if they could not fix that what makes us believe this will happen at all
I did actually write a report to them a few years back and they said the units on the tower would be fixed.

Well they worked for a wekk and never again
So keep your fingers crossed and dont hold your beathe to long

But thanks for the heads up Chirs
