Hey guys.

I'm getting ready for blackfish and since so many of you have spoken so highly about powerpro for tog, I thought I'd give it a try.

I have a few question if you don't mind...

For starters, can I use powerpro on a rod that has fuji guides? I believe that these guides have ceramic inserts. The reason why I ask is that last year I tried Berkley Fireline and these guides and the line actually cut into each other. I ended up with a spool of frayed line and a rod tip with a groove cut in it! If these guides won't work with Powerpro either, do I stick with stainless steel?

2nd question- what pound test powerpro do you suggest for tog fishing in waters that range from 30ft to 120ft?

Thanks a million for the info!

My guess is that the Fireline did not cut the guides and fray the line. You probably fractured the ceramic ring in the tip and possibly some of the tipward guides. I would check all your guides very carefully. I have been using both Fireline and Powerpro for several years and never had a guide grooved by the line.

For tag fishing 30# Powerpro is fine. I would also attach a 50# mono shock leader with a double uni-knot to the braided line.

DoctorFish, I have Fuji guides on a lot of my rods, and have not had any problems with Fireline or Power Pro cutting into them and they see a lot of use. If this happend to you, I would suggest there was a defect in the guide or you had a cracked ring that caused the damage.

Doc the answer is yes>>>>

Doc Power pro is a oval shaped line. this is much better then the rounder lines which can get into the guides. they even say it is safe on stailess guides and I actually am fishing today with power pro with my old stainless guides to test it out. I plan on rewrapping the rod so ill gamble for now. But yes power pro is the best as far as gudies are concerned

Guys,

All my tog and Codfish rods are wrapped with Stainless guides due to the extra sensitivity they provide. i have been using prowerpro in 50 and 65 and have yet to groove a guide so i dont see how it could hurt a Fuji guide.

I use 50 lbs test powerpro for pretty much all kinds of bottom fishing.

As for the guides being cut and groved by the powerpro, I can't give you a certain answer, however, from my experience I used Fuji guides with powerpro and Fireline and never had a problem.

Doctorfish.....the fishermen on the west coast use stainless guides with spectra lines, even when they fish for small tuna. Just do a search on ebay for either calstar or seeker blanks, and see how many tuna sticks are made with ss guides for offshore fishing on the west coast, built by west coast rod builders. And with two of the best rodbuilders i know replying to your question, i would not worry about braided lines like POWER PRO of TUFF LINE PLUS on even stainless guides. My favorite inshore blackfish rod was wrapped many years ago by Rodwinder, with ss guides. I cannot imagine how many fish i have caught on this rod, and the guides do not have any grooves in them. And as far as which pound test of power pro you should use, 50lb is the perfect lb test for our blackfishing.

A body of mine called and found that his favorite rod he has been using for Offshore Seabass for the past 2 years have groves on the first 2 guides from the reel. These were expensive SIC guides that were used. He had 65 lb power pro on the reel. He never had an issue with the line fraying or cutting but after reading this post he checked his rod and found the groves that are not crcks but defintely from the braid. Any explanations. That is the first I have heard of this with the SIC guides.
Also Rodwinder mentioned that the stainless steel guides are the most sensitive. Why is this the case? I just picked up a sweet Kenedy Fisher rod that was made with SS guides. I was thinking of getting it rewrapped but after hearing rodwinders comment about SS guides I may just keep them on.
