Call NYSDEC Marine Enforcement Unit

I have complained about the very same issue to the DEC Marine ENforcement unit and did notice a drop in the # of pots. I am sure its an issue we have to keep reminding them about every season.

Let us know what they say.

Your right

It's true the letter of the law, I believe, is no FISH POTS. It's a shame because these S***heads that drop those lobster pots knowing full well that they are violating the spirit of the law that is meant to protect the fish life on that reef. Makes it hard to feel all warm and fuzzy about the Commercial guys. Pr**ks

i feel kinda funny quoting myself but look at the south shore reefs theyre covered in traps and im all for it cause THEYRE NOT FISH POTS..... the traps on the smithtown reef probably are lobster traps that some lobsterman that doesnt have fancy gps electronics dropped there saying hey theres a nice peice. same with all the wrecks you fish on in the fall they have lobster traps on them all summer and for you li sound guys 11b, and the ob and 13 and the brushpile all have traps on them and they all give up nice scup seabass and blackfish same with the wrecks all are covered with LOBSTER traps in the summer.

I have fished aboard some of the local Smithtown lobster boats and they know which buoys are lobster pots and which ones are illegal fish pots or abandoned lobster pots that become fish traps. They are not shy about pulling the trap, smashing it flat and sending it back over the side.

That said, there are always a few buoys on the Smithtown Reef which makes it that much easier to find. The reef has a few very productive spots by the way if you can find them. Traps in the vicinity have no ill effects where the fishing is concerned.

ABANDONED POTS????

this pisses me off,,,this august, i was tryng to find a piece opposite the round house, hoping to find some seabass.. found two old markers on the spot...tried pulling them to see if the were something i could tie up to...first 10 feet were completely covered with muscles...finally got to an abandoned lobster trap..had 6 4-5lb. blacks...second had 2 4-5#ers...set'm free, i know they will return the favor
these lines had to abandoned, lines were too covered with muscles for anyone to be working them...why arent the lobsterman held responsible????
