Should this feature stay or go?

Hi guys.

I for one would like to see this feature taken away. I know that there is some good information shared through them, but it seems that it leads to a lot more conflicts. I believe that the potential aggravation associated with posting a report will prevent people from posting at all. If someone has a question to ask, they can do it through a PM.

Someone is almost always displeased about something in the reports. It could be keeping small fish, big fish, keeping a limit, releasing fish, not specific enough info, embellishments, etc. I think that after a while, people will not want to post because they will not want to deal with the aggravation. I already know some that feel this way.

I say let the reports stand alone and bring the discussions to the discussion boards. How do the rest of you feel?

I dont think the reports section is a place for discussion,(arguments). On the otherhand, many reports are way too vague - why bother posting? ..just to say you caught a nice fish? Its nice to see the complements to the good reports.

If one person wants to PM, then Im sure many will. Maybe that is good The vague poster may be inundated and may add details to his next report?

Can the moderator delete at his own discretion? (I know, probably a bit of work...) If people don't like the deletion, tough.

i vote - stay

have many stopped posting because of feedback?

who wants to receive and reply to dozens of the same question via private messages?

questions, comments and clarifications are good for readers as well as posters.

also, if a poster does not want to answer a specific question, he can ignore it and you never really know if he saw the question or not. it is hard to ignore a private message. you get an e-mail and who wants to get more e-mail?

it is up to the members to police themselves as to the appropriateness of their questions and comments. community opinion does a pretty good job of keeping most members from making fools of themselves. imagine how nasty and meanspirited things could get if comments were not in the open for all to see.

modify the format

i have an idea, how about when you go to post your report the message screen
has preset headings , and you just fill out the headings ..something like this..

DATE:
WATER TEMP:
TIDE:
FISH CAUGHT:
TIME OF DAY:
WATER CLARITY:
BAIT USED:
LOCATION:

AND THEN A FEW SENTENCES AFTER THE FACTS ARE CLEAR..DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVE SOME OF THE POSTS BUT THEY SOMETIMES GET AWAY FROM THE FACTS..LOL

let me know what you guys think..im sure i left a few things outin the facts comment but it was just to give you guys an idea of the format i would like to see.thanks for listening

I can live with Max171's idea. (Have only been posting for a year and a half or so.) Anyway, Max's is quite similar to other websites which are no longer being used or updated. I have been both helped (doctorfish, bacala, b attitude and definitely some other kind souls I just forgot- plz., my apologies!) and helped others with the Private Messages and would like to see that feature stay. my 2c

it doesnt matter to me...lets say that i post a report about section x and say that i forgot to say what kind of bait i was using...i have the opportunity to get 150 pm's asking me what bait i used..what bothers me is that if u post a report about someones favorite fishing spot, you get your life threatened in a PM by some loser who has no life but fishing for giving out "his" spot..that is why i dont post anymore..let people argue and debate..it makes this country great..its also freedom of speech

OK, it looks like I have the minority opinion so far.

Mocean,

Just about anything that anybody posts as a report, can usually have some useful info derived from it. Even saying, Bass at Shinny this evening, tells you that there are fish out in Shinne**** in the evening to find. Obviously there could be a lot more information added to that, but I would rather read that than nothing at all. I would hope that with less harrasment, posters would be more inclined to provide a little more info. Plus there are a few guys who post reports like that intentionally looking to get a rise out of people.

Opinari,

I think that if it took a little more effort to make a comment, and it wasn't on display for all to see and feed off of, people would be less likely to waste the time to send a PM with a negative comment.

Max,

That may be a good idea to help get the important basic information. I would also add weather conditions (overcast, sunny, rainy, etc).

It just needs to be policed

Doughboy,

I totally agree that it is out of hand. As a new moderator for the posted reports section, what I plan to do is immediately delete any responses that are out-of-line and then follow-up the deletion with two PM's;

-The first will go to the member who posted the message that was in poor taste. It will also direct them here to the discussion boards to use as a platform to voice their opinions

-The second pm will go to the person who posted the report to let them know that they should not be discouraged by those who only want to abuse the reports sections.

Any thoughts on my plans to handle the abuse this way?

Let me know.

I am in general agreement with you. The report section does have an important place on this website, but you are correct. It can get way out of hand there sometimes, with members getting upset for various reasons or starting discussions that are better suited for the....dramatic pause...DISCUSSION BOARDS! There has to be guidelines and limits as to what a member can post in the report section. I think mabey questions only would be a good idea.

Our esteemed moderator, Doughboy, has made a good point and we have been looking at ways to resolve this problem. Our reports list has always been high maintainence and now that we?ve added the questions/comments section it has really gotten out of hand. Fact is, there is plenty of good information that comes out of the majority of the discussions and I personally think we need to find a way to keep that alive. When you consider an average of 250 fishing reports posted weekly, and then times that by the number of comments and it becomes quite a task to moderate it all, but here?s what we?ve come up with.

For starters we have added a few new moderators to our boards and the reports section. I?d like to welcome DoctorFish and Togmaster as part of the Noreast.com moderator staff. I will also be reaching out to a few more of our members as this is going to be quite a task. I think we should be limiting responses to direct questions about the reports and not the ?you should have released it,? or ?why are you giving away our spots,? or any type of inciting remark.

We have also just added a feature ?thank you Mr. Nerd - that allows the poster to check off whether or not they would like comments or questions to be posted about the report. So the only way people will be able to post is if you let them.

I think we should also be made aware of any PM?s that are sent to users that are inappropriate so we can take the necessary action, but I?m not really sure how to handle that yet.

I don?t know if these will do the trick but we?ll go with this for now and see what happens.

Thank you all for being a part of this site and good fishing!

sounds good

George, it seems like you have this figured out pretty well. Thanks for all your efforts ...they make this place a great website.

Policing the reports is great. With the quality people you have, I would hope that all can be satisfied with their decisions. I see that you, George, really goes out of his way to make this place very user-friendly to all. Even so, its not a democracy! The management must make it manageable for themselves.

So ...um...you "gottog"? :) That question is answered for the day! Good Luck to both Doc, and Gottog. I'm sure the site will be better off with them onboard.

I really feel lucky to enjoy this site, I really get a LOT out of it. Thanks!

OK, time to fluke...

I only found this website accicdentally about 2 1/2 years ago and have learned much from it, have posted my opinions, asked for some (after 9/11) and as I said before, have been helped immensely by doc, bacala, b attitude etc.
Doctorfish, please dont get so busy moderating that you can't send me a PM. (-: Your tips as well as the advice from others has been much appreciated. I think George's response shoulbe help overall as well.

Posted Reports.............

Please keep the Posted Reports.
It is a good feature, as to get a little feel of what might be going on out there.
This is why they call it Fishing and not Catching as you have to work @ it to make your catch.
You do not have to answer anyones PM, especially if it seems to be the same person that can't catch on there own.
It seems that some so called Fisherman need to have there hand held.
I work hard to catch my share and if I don't want to share any imformation that is my choice.
If someone or anyone has a problem with it, it is there problem and not mine, and I don't let it bother me.
I have nothing but posotive feed backs as far as PM, and questions, and do not mind sharing with those that do ask, but the guy that constintly asks what bait, and exact location, figure it out SParky!
Well, my 2c anyway.

Nobody wants to remove the reports

I was only suggesting the question/comment portion be removed.

I just wanted to thank you for your appreciation on the advice I've offered you :) Not to diminish it, but I'll bet Doc and others have helped you much more than I have. But, again, thanks a lot. It's always nice to speak with, and help out, a fellow angler, especially someone from the same town (Massapequa).
Tight lines & bent rods always!!!

a Standard format ?

Hi guys. I think it is a good idea for a format as far as a report. On many other sites I have seen this and works well. If there are any question as far as a report let the 2 parties discuss it with each other or post a link to this discusion board.
A good report should include a bit more then a brief description
Having a set format to fill in will give better deatils for all and be more helpful.

Angler Name :
E-Mail :
Boat Name:
Date Fished:
Location:
Fishing Method:
Specie:
Size:
Bait or Lure:
Water Depth:
Water Temp.:
Time + Tide:
This is just a example if you could think of other questions for the format
please feel free to post them thanks

I say keep the reports!!!Too bad if some people are offended by the contents or lack of in your report. If someone doesn't like it,too bad for them. There are many more of us who enjoy it and find it helpful than the number of people who would rather complain about the contents.I like Max's idea........

In other words,I'd much rather see a report saying that someone is catching Bass off Fairfield or wherever with no further detail than to read no report at all.I'm all for a pre-laid out header myself but at the same time I'd rather read a report with little detail than none at all.

keep it going

I like the idea of posted reports with the format that Togmaster put up. It will help everyone out with having a goood day on the water.

As far as the private messages go I have used them a few times with limited responce. It seems the people who do not respond to the PM are in for bragging rights only. By the way thanks mobyvick for his responce on garlic scent. He was one of the few who responded.

I like reading the reports and the D board but I don't put up that many post unless I realy have a good day, I guess I should put them all up no matter what the story.

Well that's all folks just my 2 cents and I hope fishing gets better, fluke wise that is.

Bill
