Post-it notes were created by 3M scientists by accident in the early 70s, but the company has sold a chitload of them since. 3M always patented their products, so they should have had seventeen years of sales without competition.

Does anybody have any idea what the peak sales year for Post-It notes was? I spent some time Googling it but never got a revenue break out by individual product.

check thier 10K for the footnote of sales by product line, It won't be exact, as I am sure they had other sales grouped in that product line, but it will give you an idea. FWIW, I'm not the least bit sure it was a patentable invention.
