I use a portable on my kayak, actaully I am in the process of installing another-a sidefinder. Hummingbird makes a fishfinder now that works on 8 aa batteries and lasts like 40 hours, not bad at all, it has a suction cup transducer.

I use a Bottom Line Fishin Buddy for now which features a sidefinder capability. This feature I find very useful.

Vexilar makes a nice portable unit, the Boundry Waters, it's really small, light and uses standard batteries. Expensive though.

good luck
