Ive caught Porgys half the size of Fluke but put up as much fight as the bluefish. While Porgy fishing theres always action. They taste decent but why does the fluke get all the attention. The bait is even cheaper.

Size Matters

FishingChris,

I agree w/ STRIKER about the boniness of porgies as opposed to the Boneless fillets of fluke. Porgies taste great too, but there's not much to them and they are a lot more labor intensive as far as preparation for the table....Would you rather clean a limit of fluke or porgies?

I think size also plays a role. If you go fluking, there's always the possibility of landing a true doormat. You're right about the kids. They have a blast as long as they're catching, to which porgy fishing lends itself very well.

To use a freshwater analogy, how many times have you heard someone say they're going out to the lake to target bluegills instead of largemouths? For that matter the B in B.A.S.S does not stand for bluegills;)

Snappers are great for kids too, but I'd still rather tangle w/ a gorilla chopper than snappers...(but I'd rather eat the snappers!!)

Welcomed break

I don't really know that porgy fishing is underrated at all. After going through some major fluke doldroms mid-season (me that is), for porgies to show up in the absolute hoards that they did last year, was like heaven on earth. But like you said, there are days of constant action and that only intrigues a fisherman for so long ("...fishing, not catching").So, after being spoiled for a couple of days, I think most will go back to the hunt for larger species.
Note...The tussle a porgy puts up on light tackle is just awesome, especially out east where the humpbacks abound.
Note...porgy is to boat fisherman, as bluefish is to surf fisherman, that is sometimes they just save the day and we love them for it.

Since most of us do the same type of fishing I was wondering what rods you guys use. Nothing custom and about 120 dollars at most rod/reel combo. In Jones Ive seen the blues blitz all the time but they dont hit artificials can anyone share the secret.
Ps Im looking for a spinning outfit.

From my perspective, Porgies are the best tasting fish in the sound, I am not talking about small ones, I am talking of porgies above 12 inches long, I would not waste my time with filleting smaller ones.

As for action: they are always around, even when a severe cold front comes through, porgies can be found and provide constant action. Do you want even more fun. Just start chumming with clam chum and see how many are around, take of the light tackle and have a blast. just be aware of the larger fish in the slick, I had half a porgy come up many times after a stray bluefish comes along

Disagree

Sorry guys but i am going to have to dissagree on this one. Just an oppinion but i find porgy one of the better light meats. I was taught by an old comercial fisherman how to fillet them quick and i would preffer a 20 porgys over 20 fluke any day. and they do get bigger than the 12" normals my persanal best is 25" and the florida record is 15 lbs yes i said 15 lbs that is a **** of a porgy. As to quanitys there is not another local fish that beets it. Ahhhhhhhhhh Flouder is hear!!!

Are you looking for a boat rod or surf stick?

If those blitz's are early in the season they can be finicky. I have found Deadly Dicks to be the best bet for them early on, Or small tins. Most of what they are feeding on in the spring is real small, Like rain bait, So keep your offering small.

What time of year are you having trouble getting in on those blitz's?

Also you may want try to start a new thread about your Rod/Reel combo.....

Not underrated exactly...

But I know what you mean. I don't think it's so much that pepole don't like porgy fishing, there just isn't a whole lot to say about it... I mean with fluke you've got bucktailing, silver bullets, home made rigs with teasers, spinners, beads, you've got live snappers, whole squid, cut squid/spearing combos, etc.-all very different techniques for different situations. Porgy has very little variation in technique by comparison. So I don't think it's that they're underrated, it's just thet there isn't as much to say.

The 15 lb. porgy in fla. is actually a margate a member of the porgy family but certanly not the same fish we catch up here.Porgys are great fighters and are tasty.I never had much trouble filleting.Just cut a one-eighth strip from the center of fillet to remove that small center bone.Fry and enjoy!

Toghead, there is a margate, a jolthead porgy and several smaller porgy species down in Florida. The margate is actually a member of the grunt family, while the large jolthead porgies are more closely related to scup. 10 pound margates and joltheads are not uncommon down in the Keys.

Would you be more excited with a 4lb scup or a 12+ lb fluke???

I go with the fluke, thats why I would rather fluke fish----thought it is quite a sight to see a 4lb scup

I don't think Poo-gy fishin is underrated, however, I would not compare it to Fluke fishing, I would compare it with Green Fly hunting with a fly swatter on my boat in August, you get all you want, and about the same amount of meat.

Porgy fillets are much better tasting in my opinion than fluke. They are a bit harder to fillet and one keeper fluke yields more meat than does a 12 inch porgy. Fluke to me is about the blandest tasting fish I've eaten. Very little flavor whatsoever.

I generally like to take two friends out and have them share in filleting enough porgies for one huge feast that same day. The rest of the porgies get released to swim away.

As far as catching them, porgy hands down is more fun.
