We have just received work that the NYSDEC Commissioner has signed off on the new proposed regulations for Striped Bass, Fluke and Porgy, and as soon as it is delivered to the Legislature, which could be as early as today, they will become rule.

As reported here months ago the new regulations will be as follows:

Striped Bass,April 15-Dec15, 1 Fish 28"
Fluke, Open All Year 7 Fish 17"
Porgy, Open All Year, 50 Fish 10"

We will confirm this as soon as we know that they?ve been delivered.

I like the idea of fishing early, BUT I would like a couple of more years for the fluke and stripers to bounce back. As for porgies-they are starting to become a nuisense! Where I fish (north fork) they steal all the bait intended for other fish (even bunker chunks intended for bass)! Don't get me wrong-I still want them around!!!

If the fluke season were to open today and remain year round, what would we be gaining. Generally, fluking doesn't really start until the last week in Apr., so maybe, we pick up a week there. The maybe involves water temps. being warm enough. As for the end of the season (last years Regs.) most boats stopped fishing fluke, before the season came to an end (Oct. 31) So in essense, maybe we pick up a week.
I,personally can live with the existing Regs. I certainly don't intend to fish fluke in Jan. or Feb. Sooo, what are we getting. Hmmmmm

Last year, pinhookers were cleaning up 2 weeks before rec season opened on fluke. And after October, a lot of fluke are still picked up on sea bass trips and sometimes surf fishing. You never know what a longer season will yield.

A ton of porgies were kept illegally before the start of last year's season.

These regs will help the local fishing industry a lot.

fluke/bass regs

now how many people can tell me that while they where going fluke fishing on may 1st last year the opener they coaught bass now how would u feel if u cought a bass that was of say 32 inches and had to throw it back 7 days before the season. This new law is good because it will take the fishing pressure off the flounders in mid april because people will ether go fluking or bass fishing. And for the fellow that did not agree with this new regulation you realy need to take a look at the amount of bass that arer cought and what the average size of the bass are now who can realte to me on that one now how many of you anglers sea alot more smaller fish then bigger fish and by big i mean 30 or 40 pounds not many.

Barginning

After reading this post it is apperent that the DEC does hear us.

I think it is about time this has happened even if it is only window dressing for the fluke.

I know this will be a sore spot for some but the same rule for 2 bass a day could be used in bargining in the future. Weather we take the 2 fish is another story but if awarded the 2 fish it has great negotiating power for the future!

For now lets be thankful for the new laws and hope everyone gets to take advantge of them.

Tight lines to all.
