I know things are tough with the regulation
But please stop with the gloom and doom in every post

Its Tough on Us all But its been tough before
When it went from no limit to 14 inchs it was tough
When it went from unlimited catch to a limit it was tough and that was the end
Then it went to 16 and oh boy it was surely over then
at 17 lord oh lord it must be over now was all we heard

It tough we should , can and must fight to get thing changed but all the gloom and doom has truly got to stop
YOU JUST MAKE IT WORSE

Listen up folks Its not over It will be hard for us all and some will not weather the storm but its not over
We will all continue to fish and most likely continue to fight .
Fuel prices will rise , size limits will rise catch limits will shrink
Combo trips may become common and Fares will surly rise at least if you want nice clean safe boats to go on

But mark my words ITS NOT OVER

So while I can stomach hearing from the occasional for hire Captain or owner saying its gonna be tough , I cant stomach hearing from every Tom Dick and Harry That the for hire fleet is doomed
one because its counter productive and 2 because its just not true

See you all on Tuesday in Setauket

Tony, I agree with you 100% with everything you said. But I think you're wasting effort by asking the groaners to stop. The doom and gloomers were always that way and will always be.

I couldn't take it anymore so I now have become very selective about what I read. Some posters I already know not to read. Some boards I rarely visit. There still is alot of good content on this site, you just have to know what to avoid.

If you stay positive, continue to work hard and communicate with your customers, you will be fine. I fished on a party boat in the fall and the mate was telling me that they made more money in 07 than they ever have.

I wish you all the best, and thanks for being a voice of reason.

I AGREE - BESIDES I DON'T HEAR THE FAT LADY

People you have options - fish in more angler friendly states.

Delaware - Maryland - New jersey

Maybe if we take our fishing dollars to other states then the powers that be will realize that other options need to be considered.

I've been arranging trips to the above states with a few of my friends, if you'd like to join in P.M. me. The more the merrier, and in numbers we have some power and it keeps cost down for gas.

Its not just the complaining

I can handle that

It more comes down , to that this site gets visited by more than just us ,and by us I mean the regulars.

There are many that have never posted and never fished. They are the future

Its also guy's with no clue as to how the for hire fleet can and will adapt saying over and over that we are doomed

I agree that there will be a shake out and things will change

But I for 1 plan to adapt to the conditions as I fight to change them

So Its relly getting under my skin that people with no or limited knowledge of my business keep telling me Im doomed )

Add all that on top of the fact that I pay to advertise on the site and every other post recently (exaduration) Is negative all the negetivity is just over all bad for busness and business is what keeps this site running.Business is what keeps this fight alive
Stop shooting yourselves in the foot.

Thanks

Who needs 'em ?

Tony,
Not to worry, it is only the "Doom and Gloomers" that fail. It is not just your business they don't understand, it is business itself. Little do they know that most businesses are in a state of constant change. It is the only the successful Businesmen that adapts to changing conditions of any kind and makes it. Your Biz is no different than any other.

Our advantage as good fisherman regardless whether Rec, Comm or PB/Charter for hire is that we are constantly adapting to change, be it the Tide, Weather, water temp,or simply having to "match the hatch" from day to day. Sometimes one has to make several changes in just one day to catch fish.

No doubt there are tough times ahead, it happens every ten years or so, call it a "Purge", as only the strong survive. The rest give up and go away making it better for those who stick it out.

A "Tough Guy" like you with your positive attitude will make it thru OK, as for those who preach doom and gloom? I say let them "die", who needs 'em ?

and to qoute "Quiknet"
"If you stay positive, continue to work hard and communicate with your customers, you will be fine"

that says it all..........

Don't forget your neighbors RI and MA to the north. We are still fishing hard, and the regs are still very good!

AS Tony stated, the great boats will adapt and flourish, because they are great boats with great captains and crews. Multi species trips should fill the ticket quickly, and make for fun and interesting trips and pools!!

Great post Tony.

Tony - On target as always. The negativity in SHB is legendary. The time for that has to end. It will be negative for all of our interests, passions and businesses. There needs to be positive and forward thinking out of this. Through the normal channels and maybe some less than normal ways of dealing with new regulations that defy what the science suggests.

Like all businesses its the ones that have new approaches, products and outstanding service that will continue.

A lot of people know that I was a commercial fisherman. The regulations were suffocating at the best of times. We still went. We redoubled our efforts. Yes making money was part of it. But, there is this need to go fishing. With a trap or a fishing rod, the intensity is difficult to overcome. The only fix is to keep going.

So part of the answer is to get active. Get vocal. Stay focused on the long term. And remain positive.

Finally - never stop going. The day you say I wont go catch 2 fluke at whatever the inch - go buy a set of golf clubs.

Thanks,

John

I'm a PB guy. The fishing has gotten better as the size limit increases. So what if you can't take every fish home. The goal of the sport is to catch fish, have the rod bend, and it's getting better every year.

Get out there and fish, have some fun.

HI !!, Every time I see a post with a lot of "Doom and Gloom" I just "Move Along". Seems getting older has it's advantages, you finally realize you just don't have time to listen to all the "Crap" !!

Good post Tony !!

I catch and release almost everything anyway when possible, eating fish occassionaly... Kudos to the regs for giving our future generations a chance at a healthy fishery. If we were responsible 50 years ago maybe their would be tons of healthy fish stocks now... We need to go after the trawlers too... I know jobs blah blah but at what cost? Do we really need tons of herring for nail polish?

AMEN TONY!!!

Fish as hard as we can with the Regs that are given to us...All this means is we as anglers will have to try harder to put together a GOOD days catch. I know I will try my best to put my clients on quality fish for the 2008 season whatever the regs may be!!! I consider it a person challenge that will test my skills in finding the best fishing grounds for my clients onboard.

I have always tried to provide the best service to my clients as well as producing a decent days catch. All I can say is "FISH AS HARD AS YOU CAN" and good things will come!!!

If they close the season for fluke in 2008 it will be extremely tough on the industry here on Long Island. We all know what the potential outcome would be..WE ALL GET IT!!!With that, am I going to stop fishing and hang it up? **** NO!!!! It's a Passion of mine to be on the water "FISHING" for whatever..That's what I plan to do for 2008...GO FISHING!!There are more species than Fluke out there to target and that's what I plan to do...GO FISHING!!!

To all...have a great season and become a better angler targeting more than one specific species...

Nice Post

Unfortunately there is not much weeding out left to do. Look at Sheepshead Bay, there are not many party fishing boats left and most that are left have a hard time passing CG inspection, if at all. The negativity and chisseling in the bay has been there for the 40+ years I've been around. I don't think we can change that. We cut each others throat to carry the same amount of people or less for less money. The customers have become accustomed to these discounts and shop around for the best deal. If everyone held the same fare this wouldn't be the case. I feel the rising price of fuel will hurt more party fishing boats than the regs will. At the begining of last season we were paying approx. $2.10 a gallon, now it's closer to $3.50 and the fares remain the same with discounts offered on the street, on the boat, and over the internet. We need to ALL get a realistic fare and hold it like it's done in other ports. I don't think that can happen given the enviroment and past history of the bay. Unfortunate.

And yet you go right ahead and post the doomsday talk again....

I too am sick of all the negative talk, but more so sick of people telling me and others how to conduct our business......

Just shut up and fish, and let the successful businesses thrive without throwing barbs and monkey wrenches.....

NOt meaning to single you out, steamboat, but you did open yourself up, especially in this thread and its message....
