Hey folks.
I'm a NJ fisher (actually I live in West Chester PA). Two weeks ago I caught a couple of cod along w/ some ling on a NJ p-boat & I'm hooked:)
I plan on a couple cod/ling (a.k.a. red hake) trips to warm up for a New England late winter/early spring real cod trip. Based upon the most recent repots, I'll either fish Walsh's American Classic or the Viking.
I need to place an order for some tackle, please help me pick it.
I need some open eyed hooks for bait &/or teasers (rubber squids, Gulps, etc), to pinch onto swivels. What size/brand/style hooks & swivels should I buy:confused:
I also want to order a couple jigs. I have some plain & some hammered silver diamond jigs. Thinking I should buy a couple viking stlye, would you agree? What are the bare minimum MUST haves for the scenarios I've described please:confused:
Thanks much folks

Thanks for that I definatly will look them up.
However, what size/style/brand open eye hooks & swivels would you recomend for cod. Actually looking for smaller sizes too that will hold nj cod (avg 5-8 lbs) and still small enough for a nice (red hake) to get in their mouths?
Thanks again.

I wouldn't go overboard buying a lot of gear. If you are baitfishing. a 6/0-7/0 gold beak is about all you need and which the partyboats generally use. As far as jigs are concerned the norwegian vikes are most common with the 12,14, 17.5 weights. This a start and when you find out more about cod, you can develop your own selection. These jigs come with treble hooks so you can wait until you need open eye hooks. The eyes can easily be opened, I use a nail set to slowly open the eyes. As far as teasers are concerned there are so many colors and styles any recommendation is right and wrong, you have to wait and see what is working. I like red and white. You could fill up your trunk and still not have it all. You can be like a lot of fisherman and bring everything possible aboard, or narrow your selection to a manageable figure.

Since I bait fish most of the time I make rigs consisting of 50 lb ande line with 2 dropper loops between 4 to 10 inches long. first just above the sinker and the other about 20 inches up. The most important is the lower hook, since the cod are feeding in this area, where I generally fish. I also use red color 12 mm beads on the line as the cod are feeding on crabs and lobsters. You may adjust according to the conditions. You have to adjust according on where you are fishing. I would make the rigs higher fishing wrecks. I used 5/0 sproats, sharp but not strong. Look at the reports from the american classic on what they used for jigs and teasers, prime example of the difference of opinions. What works for one may not work for someone else. Be aware of the fisherman around you, judge their ability and adjust accordingly. If one guy is casting far out and hooking fish and you can cast that far, no need to see what he is doing. Guys dropping straight down, you can adjust to.
