I recently broke the butt of a surf rod that I built on a GBS1502MH blank.
I cut back the butt and the made it in to a 8 1/2 feet cod stick.
I am looking to buy a reel for it
I don' like the new Newells,Pro Gear have problems if not upgraded so I was thinking of a Trinidad 40 or a Avet LX 4.1.
But than I remembered I have 2 12LTs that I don't use Any more.
If I send them to Kerry and have the drags upgraded 60 to 80lbs and have them install bearing spacers so I can have a good free spool do you guys think they will make god Cod jigging reels

12LT Specs

Rodprof
thanks for responding to my post

line cap.850 yds 12lb
4:1 Ratio
Wgt 28 OZ/790grs

The weight is not that bad
The main thing is the free spool
Hopefully A kerry Bearing spacer will solve that problem.
Maybe someone had this type of work done on an international and can chime in on how good the free spool is.
As for the Newell I pin hook for tog and guys I fish with that tried the new newells had nothing but problems with them.
The only one that had no problems was a old 229 that 1 of the my guys have.

hey, I can't see why the 12lt wouldn't work, just have never heard of it because not many people would spend around 400 bucks for a reel that isn't the best codfishing reel you can get. However, aside from the free spool, I see no reason why you couldn't use it. I'm surprised that you've had trouble with the newells, there are many guys on this site who love 'em, and they obviously don't see anything wrong with them, although I do hear of some things about newly bought newells being notoriously dry when first bought. I would highly recommend one of these, or better yet, a pro gear. What problems have you had with the pro gears?
See ya,

I use a 12LT for cod!

But I sent mine to Cal Sheets. Kerry can improve the freespool and increase the drag, but Cal can do much more. Mine is 2-speeded, is blueprinted to get 20# of drag at strike, has high speed bearings with the thrust bushing, has the handle off a 16S for better leverage and a topless Tiburon frame. Not only is it a great cod reel but its also a kickin' tuna jig reel. As far as weight goes it weighs the same as a 113H.

Its the 2-speeding that makes it such a nice cod reel. Especailly when you get a double header of 20#'ers!
