I usually fish the flats for stripers, I have been using spinning reels for years. Just wondering if those expensive baitcasting reels have any advantage in these situations. By design I cant see how they would outcast a spinning reel, and the cranking power is really limited to whatever pound test is on the reel.

the only disadvantage to a baitcaster for a novice, is learning to cast. however, todays reels make it a breeze, once you become proficient you'll never go back. with a baitcaster, you can work the lure while holding the line between you left fingers, you can easily pump a fish while applying pressure to the spool. you'll never have annoying line twists like you get from turning the handle of a spinning reel while the drag is slipping. try it you'll like it ! penn, shimano, abu, daiwa, choose your poison, they all have pluses and minuses

They do lose about 20% on castind distance, but unless I am throwing under 1/2 ounce, I too will not go back to spinning gear. For me, its all in the comfort and control, and I feel baitcasters are better there. From a boat, casting distance matters less anyway.

I have a abu 6501 and I feel the casting distance is much greater then a spining outfit. It also has great acuracy, And fighting a fish is alot more controlable. Well nevr go back to a spiner been fishing with a bitcaster for 7 years now. I just wish they made more reels with a left hand retrivel.

Baitcasters

I also fished exclusively with spinning reels for a long time but now that I have mastered the baitcaster I could never go back. As for Left hand retrieve reels (which is also my chioce) Check out the new Calcutta CTE-401, I'am purchasing a few to go along with my current favorite baitcasters (abu Garcia).
