1st time fishing with this reel. I lost 2 plugs, 1 Gibbs danny top water plug blurple 3oz and a Gibbs yellow pencil popper 2oz

When casting the bail just shut on me and puff bye bye plugs. Between the mosquitos biting the crap out of me and losing my lures I was gonna lose it. How can I fix this before I lose more plugs? Can I make this reel manual and if so who does this work? I dont want to be bothered by doing this myself. Funny, I have a Penn 710 and that reel doesnt shut on me at all. Please, before I lose my mind someone help me out here :(

bummer on the sweet plugs.

If you are not already doing this...forgive me for stating it.

If the bail does lock....
I have found that (looking down on the reel before you cast) if you open the bail from the left to the open position on the right I will get zero closures on cast. When you perform the open the axis of the hinge should be in a perfect vertical alignment and point at the rod seat. Any other alignment with the bail may be too close to the trip.

If the bail doesn't lock....clean it out...and try to get it to properly lock.

-good luck

You can also try to keep the handle pointing 180 degrees away from the spool (towards the rod butt).

I believe the conversion kits are getting scarce- you can always cut the bail (be sure to file-sand the sharp edges or burrs).

I gotcha. I was just checkin that out. Maybe the handle was point up towards the tip or facing the water. Because i just put the handle in those angles and swung it and bam the bail shut. But when pointing the handle down towards the butt it didnt budge. Hmmm interesting. Thx
I will cut the bail on my Penn 710 though. What tool can you use to file it down?

I went Bailess last year as I was having the same major problem with the bail arm shutting . Unfortunatly good luck trying to find a bailess conversion and if you do they are not $15.00 any more. More like $50.00 on ebay IF !!!!! you can find it. Wus up Wil

Can you just cut the bail off and file it down? And if you do that can you keep a little part of the bail to use as leverage to flip the bail. Here is what i want to leave left over of the bail if i cut it so i have something to grab to flip the bail over. i will file it and make the edge round. But im thinking that can get in the way and cut my line on a cast.

My local tackle shop told me to unscrew the nut (circled in red and there are 2 springs in there. Remove 1 and my problem is over.:confused::confused:That doesnt sound right to me.
He said there is extra tension with the 2nd spring and will help with the bail flipping over prematurely.

704 manual pick-up

I had Paul at J&J in patchogue do mine over the winter. He said the parts are hard to find but I think he still has some. I think it cost 30.00 but I had to give him my old bail. So far I love it. Took a little while to get used to it but is was worth it.

The 704 has been having that problem for as long as anyone can remember. Your best bet is to go bailess. You might have a hard time finding the conversion kit....one went for $65 a few weeks ago on Flea-Bay. If I remember correctly, Penn is no longer making that kit, or most any other parts for that reel. I wouldn't go removing that other spring....then you might have the entire bail arm swinging around. Good luck finding the conversion kit.

I got my hands on a 704 bailess conversion kit from a guy from the englishtown NJ auction. Getting it tomorrow and will install it that night. Bass action is not gonna last much longer over here in NJ with these hot temps so I gotta fix this reel and get out there fast! Thx LIRI

Edit: FYI I know the guy has a lot of the 704 maual conv kits. I will try to buy them all from him and sell them to make a few extra bucks. But I dont think he will part with all of them. Im trying, he isnt biting.........yet;)

The gentlemen that mentioned he can or is trying to get them from a tackle shop in Jersey, I would be shocked if he sold you more than 1 at a time. I am pretty sure he know's what there worth these day's. Anyway good luck finding it either way.

Martin, you are correct. He doesnt want to part with more than 1. I got it and will work on the reel soon. I offered all kinds of money to and he still wouldnt do it. I paid 30 bucks for it, not bad.

edit: I spoke to chuck the reel restorer, he is looking for a manual bail conv kit for my Penn 710 greenie. Its harder to find one of those for the 710 than the 704....geeeesh!!
