the antireverse "switch" is not working on one of my Penn 550SS. No matter which way I switch it to (left or right), the handle can go both ways, (retrieve line, as normal, or let line out).

Any help......??

Could a simple as dirt and grime or something broken the only way to know is to take the reel apart. Penn parts are fairly easily to get and inexpensive. If I recall penn 550ss and that series has a problematic anti reverse. Go to pennparts(dot)com and look up your reel, there you will find the complete schematic and you can order the parts on line.

Good luck!

Eccentric is the shaft that goes form the lever to the anti reverse mechanism. Does the reel make any kind of noise when you turn on the anti reverse and spin it backwards?
No noise at all, just flip the switch left or right and nothing happens...Can go foward or reverse

Broke it down to see if anything looked fishy, but can't figure the mechanism out...?

I have taken many spinners apart but never a Penn 550SS and I don?t know if it comes with a silent anti-reverse. But just in case it is equipped with one here are some basics.

Before the oneway bearings that we have today, many older reels came with a silent anti-reverse mechanism that would lift or disable the clicker as the reel is turned forward. Once you turn the handle back there would be a very simple friction clutch device that would engage the anti reverse.

The two most common problems I have seen is that the ?tooth? on the ratchet gets dirty and doesn?t return or engage properly and is stuck. The other is the friction device wears out usually resulting in loosing the silent part but the A-R is till works.

Your best bet is to thoroughly clean the reel, removing all the old grease and reassembling it. When applying grease do not put any on the ratchet assembly (lite oil is OK) I did that mistake a few times and the anti-reverse didn?t work right. It?s the rotation is what engages and disengages the anti-reverse.

I hope that this helps a bit.

On the 550SS there is a round spring that sometimes breaks which would cause the anti-reverse gear not to engage. Simple replacement once you get the part. When purchasing parts be sure you purchase for the 550SS not the 5500SS when dealing with the anti-reverse. A few of the other parts are interchangable between the two reels. I think it's part 6D the eccentric spring. Hope this helps. Aloha
