I bought a couple of the 50vsw and 70VS and have to say I'm very happy with them. I still have my other 50tw and 80tw but there is a differance. The newer reels are smoother. Just as smooth as the shimanos. You should have no problems with them and I think you will be happy with them. Good Luck

Penn 70's

When the Penn 70's first came out about three years ago, I bought a pair for my wife, who is one of the premier stand-up marlin fishermen (or women) in the world today.

She loved the reels, but we had two occasions on big fish, where a screw would back out of the drag plate, causing the reel mechanicism to freeze.
On one of these occasions, the line broke, and she went flying across the deck and landed hard on her back.

When I contacted Penn, they acknowledged that the reel had "some problems" and to send them back in for an "upgrade". We have not used them since, but will try them again in Cabo San Lucas, eight weeks from now.

I hope they've solved the problem.

Hope your wife wasn't hurt to seriously. I Pick them up at the end of last year and only used them so far on blue sharks and a couple of small tuna. Hopefully penn fixed the problem. I'm sure if i would of went out to the dip on saturday I could of put them to the test with some of those bigeyes that were caught. Well maybe this weekend. Good Luck

I have two 50VSW's that I picked up late last season. I have used them for sharking and tuna fishing on my boat. I have landed two bluefin's last year on them. One was 126lbs and the other was 203 lbs. I think that they are by far the best reel i have used for offshore. I have also used them on overnight partyboat tuna fishing in the Hudson.

thanks guys, i picked one up today with a snazzy new international stand up rod. harry at j&h explained that initially these reels had problems, per buckleys comments, but it's been corrected. feels like a beut, can't wait to put it to the test. the new shift mechanism should be easier to use than the older style. we'll see..

question for buckley

Buckley, I have been talking to a friend about a marlin trip to Cabo San Lucas. If you have fished there before and are willing to share any info I would appreciate it. I have gathered some info from the magazines but realize first hand is always better. I'm at [email protected] Thanks in advance.
